50th Anniversary Rewatch Thread

"Is There in Truth No Beauty?", Episode 60, October 18th

Tonight's Episode: Dr. Pulaski's blind twin sister and some crazy ugly glowy lights in a box that are good with maps and stuff hitch a ride on the Enterprise.

I sometimes wonder if you could make up an image that would make crazy the people who would see it. That would be quite a weapon. Imagine, if you put it on the Net, thousands of people throughout the world would become stark raving mad before anyone does anything about it.

When The Internet becomes sentient it'll probably use such a weapon against us, but it won't be ugliness that induces craziness, it'll be cuteness and it'll very likely involve lots and lots of kittens. ;)

Or perhaps turn them into stone?

That will suck us in like the meteor showers in Day of the Triffids.

Stark raving mad people on the Internet because of the deployment of a weapon!! But how would we be able to tell? :D

I'm gonna start a business selling those cheap plastic visor thingies as "protection from crazy-making internet imagery" and I'd like to offer you guys a chance to be early investors. :D

I think the Eiffel tower has been sold many times to gullible people, for a fortune at that, so you could be on to something.

H&I said:
Telepath Miranda Jones boards the Enterprise with Ambassador Kolos, a Medusan, an alien life form so hideous that the sight of him would drive humanoids insane. Also boarding the ship is Larry Marvick, hopelessly in love with Miranda. Soon Miranda senses that someone is contemplating murder.

What was going on the week the episode aired.

This is kind of a sign o' the times episode, with the trippy camera work and the whole concept of the sentient lightshow that drives people mad. It also has an interesting score, with those organ parts and whatnot.

Something that always bugged me about this episode was the repeated, unvarying use of the word "ugly" to describe Kollos. Surely a better term could have been found to describe his effect on people..."disturbing," perhaps. At the very least, somebody should have cracked open a thesaurus.

All of the drama surrounding Miranda got a bit soapy at times, but I was intrigued to learn that their original choice for the role was Jessica Walter. She was quite striking in the day.

Some small-world syndrome going on here with Marvick just happening to be one of the Enterprise's designers, and Spock having been offered an assignment to the ambassador.

Would this be the first time we saw Scotty in his ancestral attire?

Spockdusa reminds me a lot of HenochSpock, though he's on the side of the angels. Gotta love his little soliloquy on the bridge delivered to nobody in particular.

Next week: Happy Halloween, pardners!

Prior to watching it tonight, I hadn't seen ITITNB in decades, long enough to have forgotten all but the most major plot points. I really enjoyed watching it tonight almost like watching a new episode of TOS. I forgot how much I liked it. Miranda Jones is a great character and Diana Muldaur great in the part.

Space 1999 did an episode with a creature without a shape that glowed like a flash light and sent people mad once they'd looked at it as well! I wonder if that was the planet Medusa as well?

It's funny I don't remember this one. You don't think the ambassador looks like the elephant man, do you?
