50th Anniversary Rewatch Thread

Another 50th anniversary Trek guest coincidence...Roy Jenson is on tonight's anniversary episode of Mission: Impossible.

I wonder if Sylvia & Korob from 'Catspaw' were related to the Kelvans. Both were from another galaxy and were undone by foolish human sensations and emotions. Maybe immense creatures with a hundred limbs start out as baby crab legs.

Octopuses eat crabs, so maybe they were fleeing from Kelvans... ;)

Because 1968 was a leap year and 2018 isn't, this is the last week that we'll have day/date sync with the nights that the episodes originally aired. Starting next week, the dates of the original airings will fall on Thursdays, FWIW.
Aw, this bums me out! I was enjoying watching the show each Friday knowing it was the same date as original airdate. So will you be watching the shows on Thursdays to keep with the date or Fridays to keep with the day of the week?

Me? I've been more commonly watching on Saturday morning because I also had Tarzan going on Friday. For my larger 50th anniversary viewing project, I'm going to pretend that the dates are still in sync and stick to the original days of the week, as it's close enough. The days and dates will be falling back in sync in 2020, but that's outside the scope of this series.

Y'know, catching Nimoy on Laugh-In reminded me that we neglected to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this back in July:

Well if it works for ya, stick to it, there's only 4 episodes left this season, and it's not like you can get spoiled if you wander in here and someone posts about it earlier ;)

By Any Other Name is a good episode. Captain Kirk trying to comfort Yeoman Thompson right before her death and Kirk reaction to her death are moving and effective. Seeing everybody on the Enterprise reduced to a cube form is unsettling. Scotty drinking the Kelvin under the table is funny. Of course, the fact that everybody forgets about the murder of Yeoman Thompson and welcomes the Kelvins as friends is understandable but a little bit unfortunate. The Federation has to make peace with these people. They do not want to start a war with them and their paralyzer.

If they had decided on conflict then it would take another three hundred years before the Kelvan ships would arrive in the Milky Way and we've no proof they could break through the barrier anyway!

They managed to find a way to break the Enterprise through.

Yes but Rojan said that his vessel was destroyed by the barrier and that they escaped to the nice little planet that Kirk found them on! Which begs the question of how did they escape from the ship and if they transported down then how could a transmitted signal penetrate the barrier as Rojan told us later on?
JB

^^
The way I figure it is they didn't expect the barrier, so they barely survived the first encounter that left their ship in pieces and them on the planet, presumably getting there via escape pods or long range beam-out, and then based on that encounter they have worked out a way to break through while frolicking in the meadows waiting for someone to pick up their distress signal, hence why the Enterprise went through.
