50th Anniversary Rewatch Thread

I thought I read GR nixed Kor being encountered again, as being too small-universe. I'm glad we got Kang and Ansara.
I thought I read that Colicos wasn't available. Hell, didn't they plan on a THIRD Mudd episode?

I think that was for A Private Little War, they wanted him back here but Colicos was filming a movie at the time.

That's probably why Kirk already knows Kang's name without him introducing himself, they just didn't bother rewriting the scene when they changed the name.

Wait. They introduced a character that Kirk previously knew who had never been shown or even MENTIONED before? And he's just THERE? What is this, Disco?!?

That's kind of a silly argument, now that I think of it. "If Kirk runs into the same guy that he did back in season one people will think the universe is too small! But if he runs into a guy that he's run into before but WE haven't ever seen him then that will be just fine!"

"All right, all right. In the heart, in the head. I won't stay dead. Next time I'll do the same to you, I'll kill you. And it goes on, the good old game of war: pawn against pawn, stopping the bad guys, while somewhere something sits back and laughs and starts it all over again!"

Yes, he was abroad doing a film according to Jerome Bixby as reported by Allan Asherman in the latter's "The Star Trek Interview Book."

Yeah, that's pretty much true. The revised final draft script is similar to the first draft except that Kor in the first draft becomes Kang in the revised final draft. And Mara is only the Science Officer in the first draft. And Chekov is well-behaved in the first draft. And...

Yeah, poor Pavel kind of takes it hard in this one doesn't he? Everyone else gets angry and violent. He's the only one who gets creepy.

Way past creepy IMO. They weren't aware of these things back then like we are now.

They seemed pretty aware, rape has always been used as means of dehumanizing the enemy in wartime, so I don't think it's out of place here in an episode that very openly criticizes hate, racism, bigotry, violence and war.

Still, I don't think they would have put a scene like that in one the more recent series. Garak, for example, was turned into a serial killer in one of the episodes but I doubt they would have dared to make him a serial rapist and then get away with it by saying: "I apologize, I wasn't myself".

Exactly. That was precisely the point of the scene. It adds dimension to the episode, by casting a wider net and positing that more bad things go on during war than simply soldiers killing enemy soldiers on the battlefield.

The scene with Chekov trying to rape Mara, Kang's wife, was always be cut by the BBC leaving a weird disjointed piece where it was evident what he was going to do but Kirk's leap into defence also gets cut so it looked like Chekov being flung into the wall was enough to knock him out while Mara's torn blouse and how it happened is not seen! :klingon:

 I'd hate to be the one who sees this scene for the first time without explanations.

It reminds me of why they made the Klingon blood pink in TUC and then removed the scenes that gave sense to that color change... ( The would-be assassin of the president of the federation was a human being (in a Klingon disguise) and his blood was red and that gave him away, but in the final cut you're not supposed to see that).

Klingon blood being pink just doesn't seem right! They should have made it brown or even green, but not pink! :sigh:

"For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky", Episode 63, November 8th

Tonight's Episode: "I'm dead, Jim!"

Klingon men aren't afraid of "girly" colours, that's uniquely a fault of some human men... :p

Ooops! Sorry Dodge! I've never liked pink as a colour really, nothing to do with girly colours as such! The only guy that looked good in pink was Bret Hart to be honest! :techman:
