I disagree. Dalton had excellent material to work with in The Living Daylights, and, like Quantum of Solace nineteen years later, Licence to Kill has more in common with revenge films than with any Bond outings, and is still an excellent film on its own.

I really wish they had done the Bond movies in novel order and been more faithful to the books. Granted The Spy Who Loved Me won't work on the big screen, but still, I wish the movie canon had been more faithful.
When Flemming sold the film rights it was on the condition that no part of the The Spy Who Loved me was to be used other than the title.
Also I think originally at the end of one of the books (might of been From Russia with Love) that Bond is killed but it's changed so he's back with the next book.

Been over 10 years since I read it, but basically Bond winds up snowbound in a hotel with a woman who's being chased by some hoods and Bond does what he does best to the hoods.
FYEO is at best an average Bond film. There's nothing that really makes it great, but there's not much really bad about it either. The first couple of Moore films were decent and more memorable. But after Moonraker which was terrible they were all kind of the same more or less. There wasn't anything special about any of them but nothing really terrible either. With Dalton as the Bond there was an improvement IMO. And I kind of wish there would have been a couple more Dalton films. But I did like Brosnan as Bond as well. After TND the writing went to shit. Till CR
I might put Dianna Rigg as the best Bond girl. But Michelle Yeoh, Barbara Bach, and Ursela Andress are all close. Carey Lowell may be the 5th one if I were to add one more. Or Daniela Bianhi.

Dalton is probably my favorite Bond with Licence to Kill by favorite Bond movie. He totally made Bond is own with just the two films he was in.
I share the opinion of those who say that For Your Eyes Only is their favorite Roger Moore Bond film.

Live and Let Die was just a boring movie..great song, but boring..
The Man with the Golden Gun was just awful..and boring..with a terrible song...
The Spy Who Loved Me was where Moore started to click. Great song (won Academy award)...
Moonraker...we agree there, that movie was just bad..
For Your Eyes Only...Moore's best, IMO...got back to basics..great chase scenes...great one liners...hot Bond Chicks....
Octopussy...a good, not great movie. Moore starts to show his age...
From a View to A kill..back to where he started...just like Live and Let Die, it was a boring movie and moore was way toooooo old by this time...
Thats my round up of Moore's 007 tenure...better than Brosnan's by a mile..

90s - GOLDENEYE (just not as bad as the later sequels, plus it had Sean Bean!)
21st century - Even with Craig as the worst piece of casting in film history, QUANTUM easily outpoints DAD and CR as the only good bond flick since LTK. DIE ANOTHER and CASINO are for me are among the worst ever (along with VIEW TO A KILL and TOMORROW NEVER DIES and MOONRAKER and probably the first couple Moores.)
60s From Russia With Love and On Her Majesties Secret Service are the top 2. I'll take FRWL barely.
70s-Diamonds are Forever
80s-Licence to Kill
90s-Tomorrow Never Dies, Goldeneye is good though. They started going way to far with the strong Bond Girl after TND though.

As I recall, he was quite embarrassed by the book. It really wasn't that bad, when you read it understanding the Bond only shows up near the end.
He gets stuck by the poisoned boot knife at the end of From Russia With Love and we are led to believe that he doesn't make it. There's a comment on Bond's convalescence in the next book, Dr. No.
The first two thirds of the book are about the girl, an autobiography of her life, and then the appearance of the hoods and her speculations on why they are there (they're going to burn the place to the ground so the owner can collect on the insurance). In the last third, Bond shows up, as I recall, with a flat, asks for a room, is denied it by the thugs, Bond demands on the grounds that the sign says vacancy, and they give in. When Bond realizes what is happening, he goes ape on the thugs, saves the girl, beds the girl, makes good with the law, and rides off into the sunset.Marc said:

For Your Eyes Only is my favorite Moore film. I thought it captured the spirit of a lot of the early Connery films.
True, he was apparently horrified by the book's terrible reviews and the backlash from Bond fans. I think he said at some point later it was a huge mistaking taking such a strange left turn with a Bond novel.
Interestingly, the novelization of the TSWLM film script was actually quite good.
As for FYEO, I've always thought this was by far the best of the Moore movies. It was the only one that even attempted to be serious - the rest of those films were basically just action-comedies and have more in common with with Austin Powers than with Ian Fleming's James Bond.
Which could of been the best we could of gotten.
Could Moore had pulled off the thuggish Bond of the books or even the early Connery?

No, but he could have been a bit tougher (see the 'eat the heroin' scene in WILD GEESE.) Then again, when he was tough as Bond, it didn't often work (slapping Maud Adams in GOLDEN GUN.)
I hate this movie. I don't know what it is about it, but I can't friggen stand it. It's right there on the bottom of my list with DAD.
