I liked Star Trek V. Although the humour's very hit-and-miss, it captures the characters really well. The film most evocative of The Original Series itself.
That's because they are geniuses.

Yeah, you can easily follow it without having seen "Space Seed." I had probably seen TWOK a dozen times before I ever watched the TOS episode. The only line that always confused me was when Khan says, "On Earth, in 1996, I was a prince...." It's a weird line if you don't know the backstory!
Because that's not what he says.
"On Earth, two hundred years ago, I was a prince with power over millions..."
I think the year references were all in Space Seed.
I could have sworn he said 1996 in the movie, but maybe I'm wrong. I don't know where else I would have gotten that year, though, because it was a long time before I ever saw Space Seed.

I tried a word search on "1996", but it was quoted as "... lost in space from the year nineteen-ninety-six..."
The date of Khan's departure also appeared in numerous press releases of the day.
Certainly they kept the time of his reign to "1990s".

I think the general consensus is that Star Trek II is a much better film than Star Trek: The Motion Picture as it returns to the roots of the original series more than the original movie. It's also got plenty of action, which the first movie lacked in spades but it made up for this in other ways.

Yeah, Khan does say both - he does say 1996 AND two hundred years ago. All during the scene on the planet.
And I never said you can't watch Khan without watching Space Seed. Just that many people had seen Space Seed before ST II.
As for TMP VS TWOK, yeah, most people consider Khan superior. It's a much more entertaining movie, with more action. And it has an entirely different look and feel. Just the change in the uniforms makes it feel completely different. Those uniforms got seen from Khan on, while TMP dress was never visited again AFAIK.

The one-piece jumpsuits were dyed for use by crewmen in the latter films.
^Admiral Pike wore a variation on Kirk's TMP penguin dress uniform at the end of STXI.
