24th Century Fashion

When the costume department decided to make an effort with an alien culture, they regularly went for a clown look; eg the Ferengi and Neelix.

I quite liked the efforts they made for them, to be honest. Quarks suits (well, when they got away from the darker versions) always looked spot on for the character, and Neelix was the same. The right costume for the right guy.

The pajama look for uniforms didn't really bug me that much (though I only really thought that applied to Nog's cadet uniform) as I liked the logic of it being comfortable.

I agree about Quark's suits. In fact, I think he'd probably be my pick for the best dressed character in all of Star Trek. His clothes are really unique and look just perfect on him. I also liked Picard's waistcoat/vest in First Contact, but I don't think it looks as good on Sisko. The Klingon ceremonial outfits in "You Are Cordially Invited" were cool too, especially what Dax wore.

If its a choice in "this weeks budget" between a spectacular Ka-Boom or someone wearing a nice frock, then I suspect the budget would be pointed in the direction of the Ka-Boom...?

It would be interesting if we saw humans on Earth in the more tropical climate

Yes! Absolutely! I do indeed concur! Whole-heartedly!

This would be hotter if it weren't for her slicked-back short hair and kiss-curl. I just don't want to feel like I'm "doin'" Bill Haley, ya know?

^ I concur.

Actually, to tell the truth, I don't find that outfit particularly flattering on her at all.
Still, YMMV.

Cheers,

I like that in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier Kirk wore jeans and a flannel shirt. It's possible some things may never go out of fashion. (That's more for the jeans than the shirt!)

:techman: Agreed. In the fourth season TNG episode Qpid, Vash showed us that in the twenty-fourth century smart women still know the importance of having the iconic 'little black dress.'

Warmest Wishes,

I like the blandness. They are not concerned about looks, fashion, money, and other nonsense. They are there to learn and improve themselves. It's what Trek is all about.

That's not it, though. 'Working to improve themselves' doesn't mean their Communist drones wearing whatever crap the Commissar hands out, nor does it mean they no longer care about how they look; it means they're not trying to one-up each other constantly. It was also specifically part of GR's vision that the crew of the Enterprise (and by extension the rest of the Federation) would be able to have whatever things they wanted due to the advent of the replicator, which was also a factor in economic competition no longer mattering. Why shouldn't they want to look their best if they 'work to better themselves and the rest of humanity'?

may be colorful uniforms are a taboo, like pink on guys is today? May be they think colors dont look humble and make you look like a clown or a child.

pink on guys is coming back. at least in the UK. i won't be seen dead in it, but i see people on TV and around town wearing pink shirts or sweaters.

oh, sorry. it's not pink it's 'slamon'. or something.

It's coming back here too. I don't like pink either, honestly, and it's not a macho thing - it's just one of those colors I dislike myself in.

Look their best? Fashion is based on opinion of a few individuals, what does it have to do with improving humanity?

Put more simply, if they're trying to improve themselves, why wouldn't they want to improve EVERYTHING - their minds, their bodies, their looks and so on, as far as they could, based on their own personal standards, not those of 'society'?

Besides, surely they are allowed to have fun, right? It's not all improving themselves and bettering mankind. Maybe I'm just not evolved enough, but all improvement and no play sounds really dreary to me. They are supposed to have better lives, too. Well, hate to tell you, but clothes can be a lot fun. If it's not wrong to have fun in the holodeck or Ten Forward, why would it be wrong to have fun with clothes?
