And then team up with Mel Gibson's character in "Edge of Darkness"
Decent couple of hours, but I would say in terms of action, this was some of the quietest premiere hours the show has seen. I think the only action was the gun fight and the copter exploding. So far, I like the Hassan and Hastings characters, and it's so weird seeing Sackhoff in a role that's not starbuck. I'll get used to it, but it will take time. And is it me, or in the last few episodes (going back to last season) they've handled Kim really really well. Big improvement from the Mountain Lion (Just curious, and this is a stupid question, but what is the difference between a cougar and mountain lion) years.
Looking forward to seeing Walker again, and it looks like this year she's going to kick ass. Loved the quote in the trailer:

Just finished watching the first two eps.
MY GOD!! How do these people get put in charge of CTU? Does the government actually go looking for the stupidest bureaucrats they can find them give them the command position? It sure seems that way.
And by god don't they know by now, after 15+ years, that if Jack Bauer says anything they should damn well stop what they are doing and follow his every command? I mean come on, wouldn't part of their job be reviewing major past CTU events and figure out what went wrong and what went right? In every damn one of them they would see that Jack was always right. Most of the time if they had listened to him in the first few hours everything would have been solved without a major body count. He's almost singlehandedly saved the USA and most of the world from more wars and biological and nuclear devastation at least 5 times.
As soon as the President heard that Jack Bauer was involved she should have called him and found out what was going on, then issued a decree that he was to be put in direct command of all domestic law enforcement & intelligence agencies (FBI, CTU, Homeland Security, DEA, ATF, Boy Scouts, etc...) and then put the Military on notice that at any time Jack Bauer might take over command of all forces to use as he deems necessary.
I mean, come on, at this point in time no government official should ever stand in his way.
That said, does anyone know if Agent Pierce will be back this season? I hope so.

I enjoyed the premiere. The new characters were fine with me, but I can see they are already doing the silly 24-esque stuff, just more early. With Katee Sackhoff's mysterious past that of course comes back to bite her in the behind on the big day of crisis, and Jack going rogue, but this time in the second hour and not in the usual tenth hour.
Positives though, I thought Sackhoff never looked hotter. Though I wish she had been the field agent over Freddie Prinze, Jr. She can play tough better. I did like how Chloe, formerly the tech wizard, is now behind. It was the one area you couldn't touch her or doubt her, but now she's struggling so I think that's an interesting arc for her. Even though Hastings is an a-hole, I would rather see some opposition to Bauer again than a director that just agrees to everything he wants to do. There also seems to be some major CYAing with Hastings.
Also, the Hassan family drama was well done. Mrs. Hassan is hot. Not sure how I feel about the UN guard, mainly because he played Loony Bin Jim in Punisher War Zone and I couldn't stand that performance. Of course, I got a feeling he's just a patsy anyway and will probably be gone after tonight. I thought it was wrong that Taylor didn't tell Hassan about the plot against him. I think that she might come to regret that decision later on.
Overall, I think the premiere showed that 24 was back on solid, if familiar footing.

Her hand-wringing is a killer. I'm amazed anyone can stand working for her.
I commend the producers for making 24 seem real this year.
Regarding CTU,
Season 1 thru 6, there were different branchs of CTU thru out the country, Jack worked with the LA branch. Chloe is the only one left who has worked with Jack since the beginning.
Season 7, There was NO CTU, it was disbanded by the government after the events of season 6 and Jack was put on trial. Jack worked with Agent Red and FBI that season but he also worked with Chloe (to a small degree Morris also), Bill (who died at the White House) and Tony (another long story!) from the old CTU who were running independantly. All the action took place around the Washington DC area.
Season 8, CTU has been restored, and is all new, due to the actions of everyone in Season 7. President Taylor probably issued a direct order to have it re-instated. It is unkown, so far, how many other branches it has, but i'm sure if there is a Season 9 and they move it back to LA there will be a branch there (and another new set! LOL). I would also bet that the FBI is not happy CTU got re-instated it is a slap to them because they could not handle everything correctly in Season 7.
I watched the first season and quit watching because it was so ludicrous and sadistic. I rediscovered it later and with help from these kind of threads came to like it for those same reasons. If you don't take it too seriously and just enjoy it for what it is the show can be a lot of fun if you root for Jack's badass moments and groan at the silly parts and just take it in stride.
I guess a country that's had a nuke go off in LA, Air Force One shot down and gone through seven presidents in four terms would allow for drones to fly around NYC. Of course, people were shopping and playing tennis after the nuke went off, so maybe that sort of thing isn't a big deal anymore.
Not to mention the dozens of nuclear reactors melting down across the country killing everyone around them that wasn't evacuated and probably leaving the remaining land contaminated for 1000's of years.
Plus, that other nuke the went off just outside of LA.
Damn, the USA in 24 must be a radioactive hellhole.

I'm not big on the new characters (I wish Starbuck's personal life storyline would just go away).

Let's see what night two brings.

One last note: why the fuck does this show not have the balls to call this unnamed country Iran or Pakistan or, hell, I'll even take something fantastical like Qumar at this stage. Take a drink every time a foreigner refers to "my country" and you'd die. It was mildly grating in season two, but since then it has gotten very annoying.

The big reveal will be that seasons 5 through now are ALL part of Houdini Rube Goldberg Marwan's master plan from season 4. Everything that everyone's ever done since his death he predicted would happen to the letter.
