For the academic crowd: A Different Trek: Radical Geographies of Deep Space Nine

A different kind of Star Trek television series debuted in 1993. Deep Space Nine was set not on a starship, but a space station near a postcolonial planet still reeling from a genocidal occupation. The crew was led by a reluctant Black American commander and an extraterrestrial first officer who had until recently been an anticolonial revolutionary. DS9 extended Star Trek’s tradition of critical social commentary but did so by transgressing many of Star Trek’s previous taboos, including religion, money, eugenics, and interpersonal conflict. DS9 imagined a twenty-fourth century that was less a glitzy utopia than a critical mirror of contemporary U.S. racism, capitalism, imperialism, and heteropatriarchy.

Thirty years after its premiere, DS9 is beloved by critics and fans, but remains marginalized in scholarly studies of science fiction. Drawing on cultural geography, Black studies, and feminist and queer studies, A Different Trek is the first scholarly monograph dedicated to a critical interpretation of DS9’s allegorical world-building. If DS9 has been vindicated aesthetically, this book argues that its prophetic, place-based critiques of 1990s U.S. politics, which deepened the foundations of many of our current crises, have been vindicated politically, to a degree most scholars and even many fans have yet to fully appreciate.

Deep Space Nine captain Benjamin Sisko returns in a new ongoing series featuring fan-favorite characters from across the Star Trek universe, sure to thrill new readers and longtime Trekkies alike!

Stardate 2378: A bold new era of Star Trek begins! Three years ago, Benjamin Sisko made a courageous sacrifice that left him trapped in the dimension of the mysterious Prophets; now he’s returned to his home universe—with powerful, godlike abilities. But his omnipotence is failing when he needs it most. Someone is killing the gods, and Sisko and the motley crew of the U.S.S. Theseus will have to travel to the deepest parts of space to stop them.

Star Trek: Year Five lead writers Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly (Batman Beyond, Captain America) and artist Ramon Rosanas (Star Wars) present a new ship, a new mission, and a lot of old friends! Sisko is joined by Commanders Data and Worf, and Dr. Beverly Crusher, of Star Trek: The Next Generation; Lt. Tom Paris, of Star Trek: Voyager; Ensign Lilly Sato, of Star Trek: Enterprise; Captain Montgomery Scott, of Star Trek: The Original Series, and Ben’s son, Jake. But there are new faces as well, to surprise established fans while showing new readers the ropes.

Collects issues #1–6 of the ongoing series.

And the first volume of a Library series collecting lots of things. First trade seems to collect the original Countdown, the Nero miniseries and Spock: Reflections.

Starting with the Kelvin Timeline and the prequel that led into the 2009 Star Trek movie, Countdown details the origin of the mysterious Nero, the Romulan that ultimately threatened the survival of the entire universe! Then, in Nero, find out what he did in those cold, dark, lonely years spent waiting for his nemesis to arrive. Both brought to you by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurztman, Mike Johnson, Tim Jones, and David Messina.

In Spock: Reflections, the follow-up to Countdown, discover what could drive a man to abandon all he knows and go live with the Federation’s sworn enemy, his real motivations, and what brought him to this place in his life. A Vulcan on Romulus? Absurd! Or is it? By Scott Tipton, David Tipton, and David Messina.

The Star Trek Library is a comprehensive line of books that will collect every comic series published by IDW!

You mea n because it’s not lucrative or because IDW lacks longterm commitment?
IDW has never done a long-term reprint project for Star Trek comics that hasn't fizzled out.
Is Countdown the most-reprinted Trek comic of them all?
I was thinking about that but felt like I was forgetting a reprint. What is there? The original mini, the trade paperback, the Countdown Collection...

Surely, "New Frontiers" (or whatever subsequent title you prefer for that same Mirror Universe story) is in the running?

Every one of its trade paperback collections that I'm aware of (DC, IDW, and Eaglemoss) has called it The Mirror Universe Saga. I don't think it's ever been given another title besides those two.

IDW also collected it as Best of Alternate Universes.

Given that that was continuing the "Best of..." title format from earlier Star Trek Archives volumes, and that most of the previous volumes contained more than one distinct story, I would argue that the titles of the volumes were not intended as new or alternate titles for the stories within, but merely as titles for the "showcases" containing those stories. This simply happened to be an installment containing only one story (which made Best of Alternate Universes a really misleading title for it -- why not just call it Best of the Mirror Universe?).

I have no idea how they have done it, but Blackwell's have put a copy of TOS: In Harm's Way in the post! Probably get it next week.

Edit - the release date they have for it is 19 Jan 2023!

Explorer vol 1 being out makes more sense as that had 5 Dec release.

This isn't a complaint, just happy confusion.
