2022 book releases

The primary blu-ray players in this house are the Xboxes, but I did buy a small, inexpensive (less than half the price of the Criterion box set I was trying to watch) Sony blu-ray player after learning the hard way that Criterion blu-rays often don't play well in Xboxes.

As for 2022 Star Trek books, I bought the new Routledge Star Trek Handbook as an ebook, because C$60 for an ebook is stupid expensive, but C$320 for a print book is insane. Academic presses suck. But wait! Now on sale from the publisher for US$200. Which is not that much of a discount.

I can't find any reference to a Sony BDP-5300. The Sony BDP-S300 is itself a very early player, from 2007. So its performance reminding you of other early hardware is no surprise.

Not to speak for @hbquikcomjamesl , but it was actually @captainmkb who brought up the TMP DE. @hbquikcomjamesl said here that they were satisfied with the TMP director's cut on DVD that they already have.

But (addressing everyone now, not just @ATimson ) we are kind of getting pretty far off topic here. I admit to my own part in this, but I thought that if I provided answers to the questions asked, it would sort of bring that side discussion to a close, but instead it has sort of expanded it. We should probably bring this back to the 2022 book releases. There's presumably a discussion about the TMP DE going on in the Movies I - X forum (found it) if anyone wants to discuss that further, and if anyone wants to discuss player hardware further, you're more than welcome to start a thread about that in Misc.

It's been a long time since I checked: when is the next ST novel coming out? And which one is it? (I'm guessing Second Self by Una McCormack, but not with much confidence.)

My last widescreen TV was 3D, so I had to upgrade to a Blu-Ray player to complement the TV, even though the DVD player still works.

DVD players really need to go away. There are no TVs these days that are not HD. Most sold are 4k. I have a Panasonic DP-UB820 4k Blu-Ray player. This way, I can get the forthcoming 4k Star Trek movies on disc. Yes, I still like having physical media.

I will get higher resolution, newer special effects, and better color grading (Dolby Vision).

Well, the books are thin on the ground and some of us a bit reticent. Then things went a little tangential…

It didn’t come out in 2022, but there are a few great books on the making of the motion picture that would go well with that blu ray. Like this one:

And we may get the new 4K scan of First Contact eventually too.

And there is a new version of the making of that film coming out in book form I believe, this year.

You should have had more confidence! :) Your guess is (as far as I am aware) correct, Second Self comes out next month. (Chapters lists September 13, but I believe we've been told before that other than high-profile releases, the physical copies don't have a specific release day.)

In unrelated news, not a novel, but I saw this picture book mentioned on Chapters for an October release. It's a Star Trek... Christmas book??

Apologies if this has been mentioned before. I don't recall seeing it, and I tried a search on the thread that came up empty, but it's possible it was mentioned somewhere else and I just forgot.

If I were non-binary, I'd probably also be contrarian, either insisting on "s/he" and "hir" (like the Hermats), or insisting on "it" (like the Drelb).

I still want to see Steiner (the Drelb from Ishmael) return, or another Drelb make an appearance in TrekLit.
 
Seeing as how this is the book releases thread and not just the novel releases, anyone know of any particularly interesting nonfiction books coming out this year? I know the Eaglemoss flameout likely means a reduction in the number of nonfiction and tech manual tie-ins, but as the Routledge Handbook shows, there's always something.

The WKW set is the one that made me buy a blu-ray player. I hadn't seen any of his movies but was always curious, so I watched the one or two that were available on the streaming services I had at the time and said, the hell with it, just go for it. Later I discovered I probably could have seen all of them with a Criterion Channel streaming subscription, with a year's subscription costing less than the box set, but that's life. I know I'll watch those movies again. I've already rewatched Chungking Express. The one issue some reviewers have is that some of the movies are noticeably different from the previously released versions -- different colour grading, re-edited, etc.

I am worried about the colour grading.
Chunking has been my favourite film pretty much since I was fifteen, and really fancy a nice hd/4K print (since though I don’t currently have a 4K Tv, all my WKW films are DVD — apart from Fallen Angels which is 4K on iTunes or a VHS I can’t find)
They just go out of print so fast, and now these new two tone versions may also have aspect ration and what have you changed.

Which is annoying, because on the right kind of day I can literally run chunking express on a loop and be happy. It feels like a certain period in time for me (though mine was spent in Chinatown london rather than HK itself)

Edit to say: what I really want is a 4K iTunes release of chunking so I can just have it on hand on my phone at all times I guess.

The Doctor Who Collection sets are making me regret my decision to not get a Blu-ray player until my DVD player conks out. (Twelve years later, and my DVD player is going strong. Probably the oldest electronics or appliance I own!)

I would in no way keep a DVD player. That would limit me to buying DVD. I have a Panasonic 4k Blu-Ray player that also works very well to downsample 4k Blu-Ray with HDR to 1080p/SDR. So you can future proof future disc purchases.

I’m very sad to say that IDW has simply stopped working for me. The Year Five series was lackluster, and the current Mirror Universe series is, in a word, terrible. The upcoming crossover sounds like a mess in the making.

So, after almost two decades and almost 400 individual issues, I’m out.
