2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia

Colombian players have to fear for their lives when they play bad. 1994 Escobar was killed after he scored an own goal. But that's football: people don't take defeats of their team well. I hope there won't be any hooligans in Russia. We don't need riots. Everything is quite so far....

6-1

Football, bloody hell!

Even against the likes of Panama, this was a superb attacking performance in terms of taking our chances and in particular we have become the best team at set pieces at the World Cup. I still think we need to create more in open play as better teams will defend set pieces better than Tunisia & Panama. Still not convinced by our defence but this team at every level seems to be set up to outscore rather than sit back like in previous tournaments.

Harry Kane penalties should be shown over and over again to every kid in football academies as how to score the perfect spot kick.

It's a pity Panama wanted to wrestle more than play football, it's your 1st ever World Cup and you decide to play like that

People are passionate about sports but in most countries they'll stick with yelling at athletes how much they suck. Crazy to have to fear for your life.

I suspect that Russian hooligans know that any public violence when being viewed on the world stage is going to be met harshly and quietly later on. Russians are putting on a show here.

I am sure that the Russian police and intelligence services are keeping watch on Russian, English and other countries hooligans.

A colleague of mine was in Russia at the games Germany vs. Mexico and Argentina vs. Iceland and he said that there's a lot of police. He didn't think there was a lot of space to do anything for hooligans and the like. And I think that it was made clear to the Russian hooligans that they're supposed to stay quiet. So I don't expect anything big to happen.

Uruguay vs Portugal and Spain vs Russia in the round of 16.

I am surprised that Spain was behind in the game with Morocco till they leveled it in extra time. Portugal failed to defend their lead.

Iran came within the side netting of knocking Portugal out of the World Cup and Spain once again look weak. Spain are so busy trying to overplay they forget the basics like defending and Portugal problem is when Ronaldo has an off night then it highlights how poor the rest of the squad is.

Uruguay will probably brush Portugal aside and Ronaldo will struggle to get anything past their centre backs especially Godin who for me is the number 1 CB on the planet. Spain still should progress past Russia who got a big dose of reality today.

With the Group stages almost over, I was wondering if you had to pick a World Cup XI at this stage then who would you choose?

(3-5-2)
GK - Halldórsson

RWB - Trippier
CB - Giménez
CB - Godín
CB - Maguire
LWB - Strinic

CDM - Xhaka
CM - Lingard
CM - Modrić

ST - Kane
ST - Lukaku

I think that Portugal is going to beat the South Americans.

Already two really interesting pairings in the round of 16 - Uruguay vs. Portugal and France vs. Argentina. We'll find out tomorrow whether we can add Germany vs. Brazil to that list.

France and Denmark just gave us the first goalless draw.

Sad to see Nigeria exit early. They were fun to watch.

Oh, well, it was fun while it lasted. I suppose qualifying for the World Cup is an achievement in itself but we simply don't have the class to go any further, and given the state of the sport in this country it's difficult to see where that class - or at the absolute least, someone capable of regularly putting the ball in the back of the net - is going to come from. It's a pity van Marwijk's tenure is over. He had a terrific impact in a short space of time and had a much more realistic view of our capabilities than his predecessor. I'm not sure Graham Arnold has a similar viewpoint.

Poor Messi. Someone of his (extraordinary) class not only saddled with comparisons to the deified cheat (typical puerile crap from him at the end there) but with some woeful team mates. Pity he can't literally win the World Cup on his own.

I wouldn't have thought I'd ever root for Argentina this way, but there I was, catching myself pumping my fist - overall a surprisingly bad showing by them, Nigeria wasn't up to snuff by far yet they still struggled
