2016 MLB Regular Season - It's an Even Year...

Clayton Richard refused an assignment to AAA and was released.

Our long national nightmare is over.

Teixeira is retiring at the end of this season.
Good choice I think. He just keeps breaking. The last three years have been hell for him. If he could stay healthy, he would certainly be productive.

Good guy. I'm glad he was a Yankee.

Last year of his deal, there was no way in hell the Yankees would re-sign him given the way they're cutting costs, and he's broken down. Put him into the Hall of Very Good.

So ARod is having a Press Conference today, considering what's going on, think he's going to announce his retirement.

May as well try and squeeze SOMETHING out of the 26.5M they will owe him next year, I guess. Although in the press conference, said he was saying goodbye to the team, so not sure how much they want his advice

Given the way they've treated him over the last few years, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets and takes a non-roster invitation to spring training from some other team. He's being outright released on Friday, so it's not like any team would be on the hook for more than the league minimum if he showed he had a little left in the tank in spring. I'd still like to see him reach 700 dingers.

Girardi wasn't even on it as best as I can tell. when he took the podium all he could say about what he plans to do this week was "I'll have to talk with him". I think the front officer just wants to get rid of him.

I believe it's 21 million next year.

I'd be very surprised if any team was that stupid. He can't even bat .200 being only a DH who was relegated to only batting against lefties. No national league team would take him because he's be a liability in the field.

The Yankees should have cut their losses after the major decline post all-star break last year. What ever it was he was taking prior to the start of last year, it wore off.

So, no HOF love for Tex Timby? One of what, 5th switch hitter in the game to hit 400+ home runs (in only 14 years, it took Beltran 19 and "HOF" is always thrown around with him), gold glove first baseman?

I'll trade injured Matt Harvey, recovering Zack Wheeler and outfielder Curtis Granderson to the Dodgers for minor leaguer Yasiel Puig.

It's not any worse than the one for one for Jose Bautista that Toronto radio stations were floating before the deadline.

For me, my primary criterion for a Hall of Famer is, "Was he the best player at his position for an extended period of time?" And I don't think Teixeira's peak was genuinely long enough to make that argument. He was only a truly elite hitter for maybe five or six years out of the fourteen years he played, and in his career, he's only finished in the top ten in the league in OPS+ once.

Going by JAWS, he's the 29th-best among first basemen all time, substantially behind non-Hall guys like John Olerud, Bagwell, McGwire, Palmeiro, Keith Hernandez and some other dudes who aren't eligible yet (Helton, Thome and Giambi, notably, and some still-active players like Pujols and Miggy; by the time Joey Votto is done he'll have Teixeira smoked, too). He'd immediately become the worst first baseman in the Hall if he were voted in; by JAWS, the only guys with lower scores are Frank Chance and Jim Bottomley, both of whom played during the dead ball era, and Orlando Cepeda, who was elected in one of the most bonkers Veterans Committee votes in memory.

yeah, hate the watering down of the HoF and wanting to put everyone in. Hall of Very Good, sure. Hall of Fame? No. Let's keep it for the generational talents. The guys you'd avoid going to get a beer for because they're going to be up this inning. Or a pitcher that you think could throw a no-no for any time he's got the ball.

Hate even discussing the 'decent' players; if you're HoF-worthy, it should be pretty obvious upfront. No shame in not making it, let's just keep it to the top of the top percent. Also hate the ones that get in on counting stats. I mean, it's great that you were a decent player for a long time, nice little career. But are you HoF worthy because you were able to hang around and be decent a long time? I say no, I want the guys that were the best of the best, the guy the other team says "aw crap, we gotta face X next game" instead of "cool, he's still playing? Loved him when I was a kid"

The push for new stadium money, or at least money for "improvements" continues.

The Diamondbacks have been denied $65M for cosmetic improvements.

Story

The Diamondbacks tried to circumvent Maricopa County by proposing that the city of Phoenix (where the ballpark is located) take over as landlord of Chase Field. The advantage for the Diamondbacks is pretty straightforward: the Maricopa County Stadium District doesn’t have the ability to raise new taxes to fund these repairs, and the city of Phoenix does.
That was in April, the same time that County Supervisor Andy Kunasek wrote a letter to Diamondbacks President Derrick Hall that used some pretty strong language. From the azcentral.com story:
[Kunasek described] the baseball business as “evolving into a parasitic enterprise.” He accused Hall of selling a “false narrative,” slandering county board members and doing “irreparable harm” to taxpayer confidence in government.
As if that wasn’t strong enough, Kunasek chose to deliver the letter along with some choice four-letter words. As Kunasek delivered the letter to the team, he directed a profanity-laced storm at Hall, calling on owner Ken Kendrick to “take your stupid baseball team and get out” and go back to “f–king West Virginia,” according to team notes that Kunasek does not dispute.Though hand-delivering a letter has its charms, perhaps a stamp and an envelope would have been a wiser choice of delivery method. Kunasek is obviously passionate about this issue, but he’s said that he won’t be running for re-election this year.

The Rangers are going to be paying Prince through 2020. Hope they have a decent insurance policy on him.

Edit: Looks like they can recoup about $36 million of what he's still owed if he takes a medical buyout.

Edit 2: Tommy La Stella is still refusing to report to AAA Iowa, eleven days after he was assigned there (because, you know, Chris goddamn Coghlan is so fucking valuable). Players have 72 hours to report to a minor-league assignment after it's issued, so he may be subject to disciplinary action including forfeiture of pay.

I think they kept Coghlan because they traded someone for him  but he's not what he was last year.

LaStella is a much better player right now, but he should've just reported to Iowa.

Maddon likes his toys, and for whatever reason, he has this inexplicable love of Coghlan. I don't think I'll ever understand it, unless he prays Coghlan gets on base and then does kamikaze slides on dudes.

Well, the Red Sox call up another young stud. I looks like Andrew Benintendi will be a great stick for them in the future although he hasn't quite master the green monster yet :D

The Yanks haven't ruled out dumping McCann either. Sanchez has a canon and seems to be pretty comfortable at the plate.

Yeah, while Benintendi would have been the one I'd have picked to headline a Sale deal (no way Moncada moves for anyone right now), kinda happy that deal didn't happen. Kid can play. Not fitting him for Cooperstown now or anything, but Benintendi/Bradley/Betts doesn't look like too shabby of an outfield for the next decade or so... :D
