2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (LOL NO)

Most likely, they're both in the wrong, so Williams sent Pap back out there knowing it.

One would hope at least. We don't know what was really said.

I'm assuming Arrieta blew the perfect game by hitting Burnett with a pitch in the 6th.

ETA: Ah well, there's a hit anyway. So, 7 IP, 1H, 1 HBP.

As a Red Sox fan I miss Papelbon the closer, but I don't particularly miss Papelbon the person very much.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Can't believe they sent Paps out to pitch after that!

And to be fair, you can see Harper say "Wanna settle this right now?" right before Papelbon went at him, so I guess Harper kinda asked for it ;)

But yeah, that's sorta what happens when a team has a shitty stretch and then isn't playing for anything. Papelbon was pissed at Harper about being called out for the Machado beaning a few days back, and then Papelbon gave Harper shit for not running out a fly ball. Shit happens when you're losing, things that would normally get laughed off or handled in-house suddenly start to grate on people. And Papelbon has never been the smart, calm, and rational type; he's a loose cannon

Ha, nice. Calling out his own simulation

Papelbon suspended by Nationals for 4 games and suspended by MLB for 3, ending his 2015 season.

I will be gobsmacked if he throws another pitch for Washington.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Yeah, he's most likely done in Washington, no doubt. I always thought it was odd that they traded for him anyway. Didn't they already have a closer who was performing well?

Drew Storen, who was pitching lights-out until he got hurt.

I keep hoping that one day, somebody will come up to bat against him and once Pap does that stupid move where he just stares at home plate for what seems like 2 minutes, the batter will burst out laughing.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Fox Sports' CJ Nitkowski polled a number of current and former players about the Harper/Papelbon situation, and the majority of them sided with Papelbon.

Most players are pinheads (except for my favorite players on my favorite team who are all of far above average intelligence) so this is no surprise. "Playing the game the right way" means Harper never should've publicly called out Papelbon for doing something that'd likely get Harper hit in the ribs.

Jerry Dipoto named Mariners GM

Solid pick for Seattle. It will be interesting to see how he does now that he's not stuck with Mike Scioscia's tragic illness.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

They're both bigmouths, Harper just usually backs it up with his play.

Papelbon is totally in the wrong here, and acting like a jackass, but lets not act like he hasn't been one of the better relief pitchers/closers of the past decade. He isn't some nobody.

There's no question about that. Then again, he really hasn't earned any benefit of the doubt in years.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

I don't necessarily agree with the Machado HBP*, but that's irrelevant to the Harper situation. They're completely unrelated.

In this instance, Pap's right: Harper should have hustled more. Pap was entirely within his rights to call him out on that. And what's more, Harper bitched to the media about it, which you just don't do.

*if Pap ends up on another NL team, I actually hope he plunks Harper. Don't even try to tell me Harper wouldn't deserve it.

Relievers should STFU - Mark DeRosa said as much on MLB Network the other day. Papelbon is going to school the damn MVP on hustling? How silly.

Papelbon's 'rights' are stupid 'unwritten baseball' rights - If the O's had broken Harper's wrist hitting him for that dumbass beanball (because Machado hit a homer of Scherzer) Harper should get to choke-out Papelbon, right?

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

^ Pap is a veteran. Harper is not. That alone makes all the difference.

Harper is the one who should STFU and listen to those with more experience. I don't fucking care how good Harper is, or how much of an MVP he is, that doesn't mean jack SHIT.

The thing with Pap and Machado is completely irrelevant to this discussion. Harper had nothing to do with that, but he DID have something to do with not hustling when he should have.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Yeah, Harper has a well-known history of dogging it. Right.

In other Washington news, Scherzer blew a no-hitter with five outs to go, making it the second most-publicized Nationals choke of the last few days.
