2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (LOL NO)

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

CG from Lester on the back end of a day/night doubleheader where the pen was used heavily in the early game due to Hammel implosion. Just what the Maddon ordered from an Ace.

The bullpen was the problem in the 3 consecutive losses. Lester had to throw a CG.

And...OMG...Lester picked off a baserunner.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

FiveThirtyEight piece on the evolution of Jake Arrieta.

Edit: Also, with Hammel having yet another crappy outing, I have no idea who the hell the Cubs' third starter would be in a playoff series. Both Hendricks and Hammel have been bad lately, Dan Haren has like two good starts all season, Wada hasn't been given a chance in ages, and Wood & Richard are mop-up guys more than anything else.

Edit 2: Alex Rodriguez is about to join the 2000 runs / 2000 RBI club, whose other members are a couple of guys named Ruth and Aaron.

That is a really good piece on Arrieta. Would you attribute all that to Bosio, or has anyone else been involved with the pitching staff?

If it is just Bosio, the Cubs better lock him up as fast as Arrieta. The man is a guru.

ETA: I saw the video of Lester's pick-off move. Not so much a pick-off as Starling Marte breaking for second while Lester was looking straight at him, then they got him in a run-down. Marte got a little over anxious.

Hard to say. Part of it is definitely attributable to Bosio, considering how much blood he's been able to get from stones like Hammel and Wada, although Hammel's wheels have fallen off in a bad way. But, yes, the Cubs will need to move quickly to retain him after this season, as his contract is up and after Arrieta evolved into a moon monster, he's going to be a hot commodity.

I think sometimes, pitchers just don't hear what the coach is trying to say. They may think they know better how they need to pitch.

Luckily Arrieta listens really well.

Big hug for Bosio after the no-no. That was nice to see.

Milo Hamilton, the voice at various points of the Cardinals, Braves, Pirates, Cubs and the longtime voice of the Astros, has passed away.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

It's sad to see Hamels and Papelbon go, particularly after Hamels no-hit the Cubs the other day, but I can't blame them. They want to play for contenders, and the Phillies aren't going to be that for a while.

Yeah, they should be cheered (well, Hamels should be) and wished well in the future. But it's good for the Phillies to actually get something to build from an good for them to have a chance to win something.

MLB has either got to remove the warning for hit batsmen or actually enforce it, with no more "judgment" calls. If the umpire issues a warning and someone hit another batter, that pitcher is gone. Regardless of the judgment of the umpire. I'm tired of it, its just one of those boondoggles that makes baseball look stupid.

I disagree, but I'll go further as well. I would remove the concept of warnings entirely. If a hit batsman seems intentional, he should be tossed without a warning. Tossing people, to me, is saying you can't do it. And it doesn't matter to me whether it's the first person hit or not.

Determining intentional or not is all judgement, and with the inconsistency in strike calls I've seen this year, I don't think any of these umps should be making that call.

Not to mention the occasional ump who confronts players. They might make the "intentional" call just because a pitcher was questioning his strike zone.

I know I'm responding to quite an old post now, but I thought this was relevant:

Jared Weaver gets fed up with Kyle Seager calling timeout (and being a dick about it), hits him with a pitch, and gets tossed

I thought it was absolutely the right call to toss him and that's regardless of whether warnings were ever handed out.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Great win for the Cubs, 8-3 over the Cards. The Cubs took 11 BB's.

Castro went 3/3, 6 RBI, 2 run HR, 3 run HR. He's been on fire lately, hitting over .400 in his last 16 games and playing great defense.

It's putting the Cubs back in that "good problem to have" with too many good infielders. Baez has been playing lights out defense too, even at third.

Neil Ramirez looked great in the 9th. It's good to have him back in the pen.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Some beanballing, too. Notorious dirty pitcher Dan "Babykiller" Haren had a wild curveball hit Matt "The Right Way" Holliday in the head, so Belisle decided after his team was down by 5 that he had to throw a fastball behind Anthony "Mussolini" Rizzo.

Heavy, heavy use of the bullpen today, though. The Cubs need to get 6 innings out of their starters not named Lester or Arrieta, or else arms are going to start falling off.

Edit: Damn, Maddon is tossing bombs about throwing at Rizzo, who coincidentally is one HBP away from becoming the 2nd 30 HR / 30 HBP player in history. Don Baylor did it in 1986.

Yeah, the *second* Rizzo HBP was either in retaliation for the Haren pitch (where only an idiot would have done it intentionally given the game situation) *or* Castro hitting two homers.

"Playing the game right right way", folks.

Yep. Haren's pitch was a curveball that got away from him, same as the first HBP by Lyons.

I'm surprised Chase Utley never got that achievement. It appears he got to 33 HR and 27 HBP, but never quite made it over the hump.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

On the second of his two home runs today Castro could be heard to shout "This is for you, Timby!"

The Cubs pull out a squeaker over the Cards 5-4. Rondon & Maddon got tossed in the 9th after the third Cardinal of the game got HBP.

Rosscup looked like he wanted to give it away with a 5-1 lead, but Strop stepped up when it mattered.

I hope Rosscup is left off the post-season roster. They guy hasn't done much good.

The Milwaukee Brewers will name Astros Assistant GM David Stearns as new GM.

At 30, he's by my count younger than or the same age as 13 players who were on the Brewers' major league roster this year.

Also, he spent a long time as a labor negotiation stooge in the commissioner's office and was a member of the team that brokered the most recent CBA (the one in which Michael Weiner totally rolled over and gave ownership basically everything they wanted, and sold out rookies and younger players in favor of veterans). That's an odd-ish choice for a guy who's going to be dealing with player relations on a near-daily basis.

The Yanks take 2 of 3 from the 1st place Mets... I'm not sure I thought that was going to happen.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Dan Haren's scheduled Friday start is being skipped. Rotation for the Pirates series will now be Lester/Hammel/Arrieta. Tenative probables for the rest of the year:

9/22: Arrieta vs. MIL
9/23: Hendricks vs. MIL
9/25: Lester vs. PIT
9/26: Hammel vs. PIT
9/27: Arrieta vs. PIT
9/28: Hendricks or Haren vs. KCR
9/29: Hendricks or Haren @ CIN
9/30: Lester @ CIN
10/1: Hammel @ CIN
10/2: Arrieta @ MIL
10/3: Hendricks or Haren @ MIL
10/4: Hendricks or Haren @ MIL

This rotation gives Arrieta normal rest for the WC game on 10/7 and Lester over a week of rest before NLDS Game 1 if they make it that far.

Edit: Also, Dave Cameron has a Fangraphs chat tomorrow. Please join me in asking him if it's true what the news is saying about him and a pig.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

I thought it was inappropriate for Castro to yell "*#&@ you, Timby!" after his second double yesterday.
