2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (LOL NO)

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Jake Arrieta had an "off" day, giving up 1 run in 8 innings.

19-6 with a 1.99 ERA now.

Dude gonna get paid after this season. I'd guess the Cubs buy out his next two arb years at something like $11-12 million per.

Yeap, hopefully that's the plan.

Edit: Two Schwarbombs in two pitches. Holy shit.

Quite the recovery from the 4K day, I'd say.

But will he live this down?

I'm not gonna get too excited, but the Reds took both games of the double-header from the Cardinals today.

This is as close to bad as the Cards are likely to get. I hope the Cubs keep on keepin' on and make up as much ground as possible, like with their double header sweep yesterday.

Then they get the Cards at Wrigley next week.

Conflicted. Annoyed that the Red Sox haven't been in it in months, but excited that this has given the kids a chance to really get their shit together, and the manager/GM a chance to play with things without the pressure of 'what if we lose?'

Castillo/Betts/JBJ is starting to look like an amazing young outfield. Xander has put it all together this year, Swihart looks solid behind the plate with Vasquez back next year too. Even a few of the pitchers have really come back strong since they got slapped around. If they pay up for an Ace over the winter (hopefully Price over Cueto, elbow has me nervous) and put a real bullpen together, they could continue the worst-first-worst-first yo-yo ride they've been on, but without any reason to expect them to tank again...

Plus Ortiz is 2 away from 500 HR, so at least a reason to watch every night.

And there you go. Ortiz goes deep twice tonight in Tampa (so far), now has 500 HRs. Should put more pressure on the DH issue in the HOF

Monster shot, off the back wall in right field!

Fangraphs gives the Nationals a 0.1% chance to take WC2 from the Cubs, and now I kind of want to see what sort of nightmarish hellscape scenario leads to Washington making up an 11.5-game deficit with 21 to play.

So much for the Cubs making up any ground, losing 2 in a row to the phucking Phillies.

Oh well, they get the Pirates 6 times in the next week and 3 against the Cardinals. Hopefully they can continue playing well against good teams.

I cannot describe this Mets/Braves game without using the word 'cluster'.

The Mets team plane crashing into a Cubs/Pirates game might do it.

Those 3 teams would just call up 35-40 minor league guys and still finish ahead of the Nats.

A little over a year. Their first game together was in August of '90, and Ken Sr. stayed with the Mariners until the end of the '91 season. That was when he retired.

I love how incredibly clutch ARod is, two out double in the 9th to score Gardner to tie the game.

Also Cespedes hits another home run, Mets make it 8 in a row.

Arod = clutch? I assume you're being ironic? Even if he managed to do something good, even a blind squirrel finds a nut occasionally. Guy's got a career-long habit of coming up small in big moments...

Guy put up a 1.519 OPS in the 2009 ALCS. Like, the only better postseason performance I can think of is Barry Bonds in the 2002 World Series.

CG from Lester on the back end of a day/night doubleheader where the pen was used heavily in the early game due to Hammel implosion. Just what the Maddon ordered from an Ace.

Congrats, you were able to cherry pick a couple games (6) that he was good. (I didn't look to see if he was actually good all 6 games, that's just an average. He may have had a monster game somewhere and normal otherwise, or it may have been pretty even). Which one was the year that they benched him in the playoffs? It was before all the crap, when he was still 'good'. Looked it up, may have been 2006, where he OPS'ed a commanding .205

Check out the rest of the stats, pretty clear 2009 was a bit of an outlier. In fact, looks like he's a sub-.200 hitter since that moment.

You should try and think of some non-Bonds thoughts as well. For example, and it's a nice recent one, David Ortiz wasn't too shabby in the World Series in 2013. His slash line?

.688/.760/1.118, For a 1.948 OPS. Not too bad, only 30% better than ARod's line that you held up. And Bonds OPS'ed 1.994 in 2002 world series, so only JUST over those numbers. .271 less in average, but 0.046 higher OPS. Pretty marginal difference, and don't think anyone would deny Bonds was juicing out of his mind at the time. ;)
