Joe Maddon leaves Rays
After leading the turnaround from laughingstock to consistent contender, Joe Maddon has exercised an opt out clause in his contract and is leaving the team immediately. Speculation is that he will follow former Rays GM Andrew Friedman to Los Angeles where the fan-base is strong, crowds are huge and the payroll far greater than any the Rays have ever had. Can't blame him, but it's going to hurt the team and the fans.

It's possible but highly unlikely that Maddon goes to the Dodgers. Friedman has already said, multiple times, that Mattingly is getting another year to prove himself, and it's a real bad look to spin around on your word like that, especially after only running the team for ten days. (This is why you don't give a contracted incumbent a huge vote of confidence outside of a news cycle win -- if the guy you want becomes available, you look like a clown.) Jon Heyman and Ken Rosenthal are also both saying that the Dodgers are not on his radar at all.
Minnesota is the only current vacancy, and they've been dragging their feet on promoting Molitor. I expect them to be in play. Current speculation is on the Cubs and Mets, though the Mets just said they're committed to Collins.

A chimp should manage the Mess, I mean Mets. I don't dislike Collins, he's fine. What is he suppose to do with the players he has? The Mets are such a non entity at this point, does it even matter? They will troll out players from 1986 and everyone will cheer, or have Tom Seaver smile and wave for the camera and everyone will go awwwww, Mets. Whatever...
I like Terry Collins and I hope he doesn't leave the Mets. I don't see what Maddon could do with them that he can't.
Lowest rated Game One on record. I blame Kansas City for that.
In any event, the Mets are in the same position the Dodgers are in, in that they gave multiple exuberant statements about Collins returning next season, and they can't go back on that without A) looking like fools and B) sending a really, really bad message for future hiring opportunities.

It is, and yet... It has also gotten me down about the whole wildcard "era." I guess because I like KC and I remember the excitement of their season finish in '85 behind Saberhagen and Quiz, IIRC it went down to the last game. It's nice to see them in there but it's not the same; seeing the 7th and 9th best MLB records play in the WS isn't moving me much.
Bumgarner really had his stuff together, obviously, but it didn't seem like KC hitters were doing anything much different than they had in Game 1.
