2013 Christmas/Holiday Photos and Thoughts

Although both my parents are currently out of the country, it turned out to be a really fun Christmas for the rest of the family here in the Bay Area. I ordered a turkey dinner and had everything ready by noon. Then the whole family did our "Secret Elephant" gift exchange. We rented Insidious 2 on Vudu and had a good scare.

Ooo nice food pics Gryffindorian, that fried chicken looks DELICIOUS.

This is what we ate..

Four salads, each different. Roast vegies and feta, a rice and bean and leaves one, potato with mustard seed and egg.. boccancini with yellow and purple tomatoes (the yummiest, I ate like half this bowl).




The rest of it.. chickens, korean bbq meats, home made dips of beetroot, pesto, sweet potato and cashew, olives, salami, cheeses, salsa and korean sauce all made that morning.. there was also a big panettone which is my favorite kind of cake and fig biscotti. 14 people. Had a whole chook leftover that we never brought out and some cheese, otherwise it was all eaten.

That's a Clone Wars plastic table cloth, the theme this year was Star Wars.

Christmas trifle and cake:

It's a red velvet cake with cheesecake layers in between cake layers. With white chocolate frosting.

Decadent but tasty!

I LOOOOOVE TRIFLE!! That is in no small part due to my English mother-in-law and her daughter who exposed me to the wonderful deliciousness of it. Yours looks terrific and the bowl is classic, too. I wish I was there to have a bite or four.

It took five packages of cream cheese, five eggs, one box of cake mix, a cup of butter, and two pounds of powdered sugar to make it.

I mostly skipped Christmas this year so I don't have any pictures of feasts and such. I will share a few holiday-related images, however.

This is one I took around the corner of Christmas trees for sale. I've never had a live tree myself, but I thought they looked pretty.

This was just me messing around with my camera but I am wearing a Santa hat in it so that should count for something!

And this last one was taken at a friend's place. Both she and her husband have been wonderful about including me in everything and they were kind enough to invite me over for an early Christmas, complete with a stocking and presents for me. We made fancy grilled cheeses and had them with soup while watching a Christmas movie I had never seen before, and stayed up late drinking eggnog and making cookies.

I mention all of this because she's really one of those one-of-a-kind friends, and she's extremely creative as well. The "fireplace" below is actually their air conditioning unit. She decorated it to look like a fireplace, with a mantle and everything. When the air would blow through it the flames would rustle a bit too. They don't have the most luxurious life, but they make everything they have count and are happy to share it. I felt this picture was a good example of that.

That fireplace is cute Kestra! One year I had a five foot plastic date palm that someone had thrown out from an office as my tree, I loved that thing..

It's not supposed to get above zero until Thursday, plenty of cold weather food here.
