2011 NFL Season - A New Game

Not to mention Greg Olsen, the main TE for the last few years.

But he too didn't fit into the scheme and rather than see if he could adapt, they traded him.

Also, the Bears sign Brandon Merriweather after he was cut by NE. Finally getting some good depth in the secondary.

Well, the Patriots probably didn't outright cut him for no reason. Not to say Merriweather can't be rehabilitated, but from the discussion from Pats fans I've seen, it sounds like he's a bit of a turd.

The Olsen thing, I'm still scratching my head on that one. Didn't fit into the scheme is a total cop out. The guy is a talented receiving tight end, and a match-up problem. I understand drafting and acquiring people that fit the scheme, and moving on those that don't. I mean, the Packers didn't re-sign guys like Aaron Kampman, and drafted guys like Matthews and Raji to transition to a 3-4... But what kind of NFL offensive scheme can't make use of a guy like Olsen?

The probowl, a fucking popularity contest, as evidenced by Meriweather making it twice...

Bedard of the Globe speculates that Meriweather was partially dropped as the Pats are moving towards predominantly a man coverage scheme with up front aggressive pressure based 4-3.

Meriweather was a liability in man coverage, tended to ignore coaching instructions (for which he was outright punished by reduced playing time last year), and attracted unnecessary negative publicity with his antics down in Florida.

In addition, he's notorious for bone-headed decisions on the playing field that, as a safety, were at times costly.
From my recollection of just last year:
1. His head on collision with Todd Heap.
2. That idiotic collision with McCourty last year that resulted in the James Jones (Packers) touchdown.
3. Poor read of Bills offense resulting in an easy touchdown for C.J. Spiller.

He does have an immense amount of talent but that is sadly bridled by a general lack of football IQ (read, he's a bit of an idiot). He might fare better in the Tampa 2 scheme they play up there in Chicago though...

P.S. Look up "Big Bang Clock" and you'll probably have a laugh at his expense...

Well, time for the regular season to begin. Will my Dolphins show improvement or will they suck for Luck? I don't know.

So far, I'm feeling good about Reggie Bush, but Daniel Thomas has not been that impressive. I wish we had kept Ronnie or Ricky and traded for Bush also.

Henne has looked better, but I'm afraid that if our O-Line, specifically the right side, doesn't improve, Henne's improvement won't matter.

Sexy Rexy is going to start Week 1 for the Redskins.

But what kind of NFL offensive scheme can't make use of a guy like Olsen?

Mike Martz's. Martz is still tied to the scheme he used with the Rams more than a decade ago: The tight end is a blocker. The receivers are speedsters with great hands. The running back has breakaway speed and agility. The offensive line gives the quarterback enough time for a seven-step drop to hit those speedsters, or, alternatively, the running back.

Unfortunately, he has steadfastly refused to adjust his system ever since coming to Chicago, where Olsen was the best receiver, the receiving corps by and large has bricks for hands (and outside of Hester, doesn't have that much speed), and most importantly, the offensive line has the consistency of wet tissue paper.

So, what did they do? Did Martz alter his scheme? Did the team try to improve its personnel? No, just like the Todd Collins move last year that Martz demanded, they grabbed a broken Roy Williams, traded Olsen and basically left everything else the way it was, and are now expecting everything to work better.

Short story: Jerry Angelo, Lovie Smith and especially Mike Martz are pants-on-head retarded.

Edit: The Meriweather signing? Great, just what the Bears needed -- another D-back who can't cover, but will hit dudes really, really hard. At least we now know who's going to put Jermichael Finley (or some other skill player) out for the season.

Seriously: Name a player that Belichick has run out of New England and has had a better career afterwards. Meriweather was never even put on the trading block -- Belichick wanted him gone, and there's a reason for it.

Jets are promising a superbowl victory this year. I'm hoping they do it just to shut up all the haters.
Part of me wants them to do it so that they'll have their Super Bowl and then they'll shut up about it. The problem is, I know that won't happen. Winning will only make things worse. :(

Yeah, I don't want to see the Jets win a Super Bowl any time soon because then they'll just become even more obnoxious.

Didn't they promise a Super Bowl victory last year too? I think it's getting to the point where people don't bother to listen to Rex's crap. Already too many promises he couldn't deliver.

I know it's not going to make them happy, but that may be the best thing for Indianapolis. It may amount to throwing this season, but it will help them in the long run. If nothing else, they just laid a large sum of money down on Manning and it would stink if he was back on the field too early and did something that would end his career.

I'm not a huge Mannning fan, mainly because of the horrible, horrible things he does to my team. But, he seems like a class act and the guy can play. He is the standard for the QB position (and the offensive coordinator position) and it would be a shame for the game to lose him over a less-than-successful neck operation and rushed return.

I can't say he'll be out the whole season, but it's certainly indefinite. No one knows when he'll recover.

In other news, Terrell Owens thinks DeSean Jackson should refuse to play until he gets a new contract. Yeah, TO, that worked out great for you.

If the playoffs started right now the Packers would be the number one seed. Not sure how all the 0-0 tie breaks would work out. Lots of coin flips I'd imagine.

Saints would be out.

There is your playoff picture after 1 game. Never too early to keep track.

Which game would you suggest is the best/most interesting for me to watch this afternoon - Pittsburg v Baltimore, Atlanta v Chicago, Philadelphia v St. Louis?
