2011 Lineup

Man of Steel

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Anyone know the Trek lineup for 2011? I know there's a link to it somewhere but I don't remember where it is.

Everything's such a damn production these days. Have you seen the Janeway threads? Can't even do the simplest thing...

Seems like a much sparser schedual than we're used to. Granted there are two releases in April, but nothing at all in February, June, or Septemeber. You'd figure June and September (at least September) would have a Deep Space Nine or Titan novel. Or maybe the beginning of another Lit Crossover.

Also, IDW has been pretty stingy with their upcoming release schedual. We know what's goin on through Feb, then only some vague idea of a few more entries by John Byrne someday. That's a far cry from their old pattern of planning lots of stuff out months and months in advance.

I kind wish they did the Trek stuff like Star Wars. They've already released info on novels through Nov. 2012.

September
  • Mass-market reprint of Blind Man's Bluff.
Ditto.

That one isn't scheduled for September anymore. If S&S' site is to be believed it has been rescheduled to January 2012, which makes sense given the delay of the TPB release. Pocket's decisions are stupid sometimes, but they aren't stupid enough to release the reprint less then half a year after the original release.

February
As we know, many fans refuse to buy trade sized (or hardcover) books. So this will be new for many.

And yet to count reprints as new releases would mean there were two blank spots somewhere in the past. The end result is the same. Not as much is coming out lately as there used to be.

It looks like there's no release in June, but that's because each month's release actually comes on the last Tuesday of the previous month (or usually well before). So, when it says Children Of The Storm is released on 31 May, that means it's "the June release". As soon as Declassified gets a specific release date, it'll appear in June.

But yeah, February and September are annoying.

^ That's the way just about every other book ever released in Trade or Hardcover works.

They print a book in TP only to release it again as an MM. Guess Pocket likes pissing money away.
How is that "pissing money away," Marc? Pocket is taking two whacks at the consumer's wallet. If the reader didn't pick it up in trade, they have a second chance in mass market, and the market willing to buy a mass-market is larger than the market willing to buy the trade. If anything, for Pocket the second whack is mostly found money; the writing and editorial costs should be billed to the original printing, leaving production costs (resetting type, that sort of thing).

^Not to mention the completeists who'll buy both versions. I'm not one, but I know some people on here are.

I have to admit, I'm not terribly thrilled with this schedule. I'm really hoping that Pocket adds a few titles to the list to fill in some of the gaps. I was disappointed with 2010's release schedule (I've been waiting all year long for Typhon Pact) and it seems like 2011's won't have too much for me, either.

If the market for mass market is larger then the trade market, why not just print in mass the first time around. It's most probably cheaper to do anyway.

They are for different sections on the market, different demographics. Some SF readers and libraries only buy trades/hardcovers. Some ST collectors only buy MMPBs.

Why did Pocket start doing hardcovers in the first place? Because "Spock's World" created quite a bit of excitement that ST tie-in fiction had finally moved upmarket. Had "come of age". It was a really exciting time. "Spock's World" was bought and read by people who'd never picked up a ST novel before. Some libraries refuse to stock MMPBs. Some people buying books as gifts prefer the size/weight of a hardcover or trade. As I said, they are for different sections on the market, and different demographics.
