Is there any way on God's green earth that someone on the West Coast of the US can watch the Phelps race live?
Usain Bolt is unbelievable - what a HUMILIATION of the entire field!
Running WR, first man quicker than 9,70, and he still didn't run until the finish line...
Okay, I thought this was his only second Olympics. Change that to 8, 12 years. I'm covering five Olympics because I remember one of the commentators (not necessarily in swimming but possibly during some other event) mention someone who had won gold (or maybe it was just medals in general) in five Olympics. So, in 16 years, he would be 39, and would have competed in 7 Olympics (this is his 3rd). Which no swimmer has ever even come close to. What a completely fucking unreasonable standard to set.Longevity is the key to a great athlete which is a large par of why I think all of this grandeur about Phelps being the greatest athlete ever is ludicrous. Get back to me in 12, 16 years and then we'll talk.![]()
I think there are many great athletes who did not choose to pursue their sports into their 30's 40's. Most of them, actually.Either way, I still think longevity is still a key factor in calling an athlete great.
How many Olympics do swimmers usually compete in? I honestly have no idea. I know there's a 39 year old this year (I think in swimming, but I can't really remember), but that seems like the exception, not the rule.

I've been trying a lot today to find a way. So far, no such luck. I guess we're stuck with the marathon.![]()
There's one. I have a feeling there might be a few others.^Emh, the British rower Sir Steven Redgrave competed at five Olympics and won five Golds and a bronze.
I think that's who I was thinking of (as I realized tonight while watching her race), but as noted by Cali, there are others and I have a feeling those two aren't the only ones. That would be Dara Torres, who is 41 and competed in 5 of the last 7 Olympics. She is the oldest female swimmer to compete in the Olympics. Ever. She is also the only US swimmer to ever compete in 5 Olympics. The oldest male swimmer on the team is 32. It's not exactly a "standard".Okay, I thought this was his only second Olympics. Change that to 8, 12 years. Another great athlete tonight on the older side is Romania's Constantina Diṭă-Tomescu (age 38) who won the Women's Marathon by a HUGE margin and had that lead for a large portion of the race. She's also the oldest Olympic marathon winner in history (I believe for either gender). As a runner, I was deeply engrossed by her run today, but I'm guessing others weren't considering there has been no talk about it in this thread.![]()
Constantina Diṭă-Tomescu is the Energizer Bunny! She just kept going and going and going! Damn, I hope I'm in that good of shape when I'm her age.I watched since it was one of the few events NBC broadcast live. I was impressed by her win, especially since she ran around the stadium for ten minutes after she won; she had a lot left in the tank!Another great athlete tonight on the older side is Romania's Constantina Diṭă-Tomescu (age 38) who won the Women's Marathon by a HUGE margin and had that lead for a large portion of the race. I was also impressed with how Paula Radcliffe refused to drop out of the race, despite being in obvious pain. I guess she needed to get that Athens Olympics monkey off her back!
That man has the most freakish wing span I've ever seen in my life.

that and the 1/100th stretch. I believe his power is elasticity
