2008 Major League Baseball All Star Teams announced

Today, the American and National League teams were announced. Additionaly, everyone can vote for one more player for each team here (voting closes on July 10th).

How do people like the teams? And how many players are from your respective Fantasy Teams?

I have two starters and one starting pitcher for each team, plus three in reserve for the National League. Nine players total, all from my Yahoo! team. Much better than last year. :D

One thing it shows is that the fans are still voting with their hearts as opposed to the idea of merit. Many selections are good and without much debate. Others... are obviously biased. Case in point - Ichiro and Big Papi. Not that the players do much better. Case in point - Jason Varitek.

OTOH, they at least got Josh Hamilton and Lance Berkman in the lineup. PLUS - as much as I love Griffey, he was no All-Star starter, and the fans did rectify that finally.

One player who probably ought to be on is the Rays' Evan Longoria. I'm surprised that there weren't enough fans who voted him on because they wanted to see one of the Desperate Housewives in the lineup. :rolleyes:

As much as I dislike the "every team must be represented", it has the benefit of blunting that bias. Otherwise, there wouldn't be a single Tampa Bay Ray on the AL squad.

I agree there's still a lot of bias towards who people like over who deserves it (I admit I did that in a few cases). I absolutely agree on Ken Griffey Jr. (even though he's on my Fantasy Team). Ichiro hasn't been hitting with much power this year, but he's still a very consistent hitter and he's been stealing a lot more bases than usual this year. And I'm very happy that Josh Hamilton got voted on the starting team (and not just because he's on my team). He has proven himself to be very good this year.

As for surprises/disappointments, I agree on Varitek. I'm also disappointed that Ian Kinsler didn't get the starting spot. I think he's a much better hitter than Dustin Pedroia. There are also a few players who are injured or on the brink of injury. Alfonso Soriano probably won't be able to play and Chipper Jones might not play for long.

There is no way that Billy Wagner deserves to be an all star over Johan. Johan`s win lose record isn`t great but all of his other stats are top five in the league, and as much as it pains me to say it, Cole Hamels also deserves a spot on the NL roster.

Speaking of the roster, Miguel Tejada does not deserve to be on the roster and I wanna know who he is paying off to get on.

I don't have a problem with Pedroia or Youkalis. Manny is somewhat borderline considering who else is out there, but I don't consider him unworthy per se. But Varitek isn't hitting worth anything, although I'm not sure about his defensive stats. Ortiz .... that's a hard one to defend, given that he's been on the DL for over a month.

And yeah, Tejada... how'd he get on the team? Was it in exchange for his steroids testimony? :lol:

While, even as a Red Sox fan, I don't think Tek deserves to make the team, it seems like everyone bases All-Star Selections on hitting. I mean yes he SUCKS at the plate right now, I see it every night, but there is still no one in the league who as good as a game caller as him. There is another portion to the game other then hitting.

Also, it was not the fans who voted him in, it was the other players, so that is their fault.

I am personally a bit angry that Jon Lester is not on the roster, he has been brilliant this year. And if someone is gonna vote for Evan Longoria to get on as the back up 3B, you might as well vote for Mike Lowell, seeing as how he has better stats at the moment.

Maybe they felt sorry for him- apparently he aged two years in April, you know ;).

As far as the All Star roster goes: As usual, there's a few omissions and a few questionable admissions. But it is what it is, and it's one of the few (if only) All Star games I even care to watch. Of course, I do like the home run derby even more.

Don't know about that. I do know Haren is going for the NL.

Apparently this is the first time in the history of the game that a pitcher will start the game two years in a row, but for different leagues.

That's a good point about the catcher having more to a game than just hitting numbers. He probably gets more benefit from the "intangibles" than most players. Problem is that so far nobody I've read has agreed with the choice. And that's regardless of who voted him in. Why not take Pierzynski (sp?) from the White Sox? He's got much better numbers offensively, seems to be having a better defensive season, and the Pale Hose pitching staff has some pretty decent numbers.

You're clearly looking at this from as objective a POV as possible, and I am not nearly as familiar with the game's players today as I once was. Maybe Varitek has the intangibles that the AL players like. I don't know.

True about Pierzynski, he does have much better numbers, and should be the one on the team. But, Tek has the reputation of being a very, very good pitch selector, and game caller, and I think the other pitchers around the league know that. There is a reason he is the only catcher in the history of MLB to catch 4 no hitters. There are intangibles and a confidence level there that pitchers have with him, that I don't think is there with every catcher. I remember in '06 when he went down many of the Sox pitchers struggled, and one of them, IIRC it was Mike Timlin, stated that he and other pitchers almost didn't feel as confident to throw their best stuff with another catcher behind the plate.

I read in the paper this morning, that yesterday, the day after Clay Buccholz first start in the majors in a while, Varitek sat down with him at Tek's locker for about two hours, and just talked to him about himself and his pitching. Evidently Tek did the talking, and Buccholz did the listening, and I think that it is that care, not just with the vets, but with the new guys coming up, that endears him to so many players.

I mean I think those are the reasons, if there are some, that Varitek is on the team over others. I mean compared to other defensive positions, there is a lot more that goes into catching, and I think that weighs on Tek's hitting.

Trust me .... if I'm starting a team, and I have a ptiching staff that needs guidance, then Veritek is quite probably my choice. And to be honest, it's good to think that consideration may be given to other assets besides hard numbers.

BTW... starting pitchers have been announced:
AL = Cliff Lee
NL = Ben Sheets
Hard to argue with either choice. Lee's numbers are pretty much the best overall. Sheets has good numbers and those who had better (Linecum, Volquez) very recently pitched and their managers didnt' want them starting.

I expected Lincecum to start, but I hadn't realized he started so recently. Still, excellent starting match up.

Sheets is in essence the fourth choice to start. Linecum, Volquez and ... shoot, I forget the third, all started very recently. Too much for their managers' tastes
