20 years ago tonight the Enterprise finale aired. So....what's your opinion two decades on?

"Well, it could have been worse. Be glad it wasn't."

Not helping, and never has helped.

We’ve managed to eke out more than 2 months of discussion on it.

Not bad for shite.

It is shite though. This has been a 2 month discussion, as a capstone to a 20 year discussion, about how shite it is.

I need to get fucked up tonight and then watch it.

The more time has passed, the more I think TATV should have been a regular episode and Demons and Terra Prime should have been the actual finale. Heck, TATV should have been before Demons. I think if that was the case, it would have went down better. As a finale it just didn't work.
I agree. In fact, on rewatches I generally consider Demons/ Terra Prime to be the finale and stop there. Series over. It works.

I didn't want to create another thread about this and @cooleddie74 can definitely move it to the proper forum, but I didnt see anyone bringing this news up:

And some interesting discussion on Reddit of all places:

The reaction from just a glance is majority of fans don't want it.

I didn’t mind the concept of it. Just shouldn’t have been the finale. Biggest issue is that it made it a TNG episode when it should have been a ENT one.

Could be fun. Personally I would make it about him being a Temporal Agent. He faked his death in 2245 and joined them.

There's a thread about this here, in Future of Trek.

And now back to our regularly scheduled thread dissing TATV, because it so deserves it. :angryrazz:

If Manny Coto and/or someone like Mike Sussman and Phylis Strong had written the finale to Enterprise - I wonder what it would have been..

I imagine Terra Prime and Demons would have been expanded into a three-part finale, it could have offered deeper character closure and a more optimistic bridge to the future seen in TOS. My ideas would be:

Trip and T’Pol
Grieving the loss of Elizabeth, Trip and T’Pol begin to find renewed purpose in their bond. While still processing their grief, they start to imagine a future together - echoing the emotional groundwork laid in Demons, but allowing a bit more space for us to see this.

Crew Evolution and Optimism
The formation of the Coalition of Planets brings a renewed sense of hope and diplomatic progress to wrap up the episodes. Bittersweetly, that renewed sense of optimism also gives some of our crew new opportunities.
  • Phlox accepts a role at Starfleet Academy, mentoring cadets and the enthusiastic young people. We see his first class of young people all excitedly wanting to hear about his exotic medicines, symbolising Earth starting to move beyond xenophobia.
  • Reed is offered a leadership role in Starfleet Intelligence, maybe even with subtle hints of involvement in the emerging Section 31.
  • Travis and Hoshi earn promotions but remain aboard, and we see them greeting/inducting some new recruits - highlighting their growth since Season 1 and confirming they're now seen as seasoned pros.
Archer’s Decision
Archer is nominated to lead the Coalition Council but chooses to remain a captain, wanting to explore the stars a little longer before stepping into diplomacy.

New Faces and Exchange Programme
  • Shran joins Enterprise in the final scene as an Andorian observer under the Coalition’s new exchange programme, possibly taking over tactical duties. "Well Pink Skin, this is going to be interesting"
  • A new Tellarite doctor arrives with him, gruff and confrontational, total opposite to Phlox, meeting Archer on the bridge in classic Tellarite fashion.
Final Scene
The NX-01 is in drydock for a refit as all this levity is happening. Rumours of Romulan activity on the borders stirs tension, but the founding Coalition members stand together united on the bridge - ready for what’s next.

Oh, and T'Pol finally gets a proper uniform - we chalk up the continued catsuit wearing in S4 to a Starfleet probation for a year.

Basically what we got, that wrapped up the S4 arc beautifully, but with a little more closure and emotional resonance as a goodbye.

Instead... we got TATV :brickwall:

I will love the late, great Manny Coto always and forever for giving the Trip/T'Pol storyline "Similitude." I also wish he'd written the finale, because whatever he came up with, it would have been a proper closure for our characters. No T/T breakup :wtf:, but something hopeful for them, to follow that lovely, emotional scene they had at the end of "Terra Prime."
