She may be 16, but we dont' know her attitude and line of thought; she may well have been acting like a six year old and deserved that, but then again -- I don't approve of hitting kids.

Sometimes when I was a kid I would end up with sore red arms and legs from my fathers slipper if I did anything wrong and you know what, I wouldn't even dream of hitting back EVER! even when I was big enough to do so. I know for a fact that being disciplined as a kid has turned me into a better man than if i'd never been disciplined.
This guy has clearly failed at raising his daughter to respect him, that's why she hit him, she's obviously been allowed to get away with things for far too long..

I was "spanked" and switched growing up, and you know what?

I didn't learn nothing other than to hide what I was doing better. Resentment for my mother. And the first time I was big enough to fight back, I grabbed the belt she was using on me and told her the next time she took a swing at me I was putting her on her ass and calling the cops for assault.

Spanking did zilch for me that teach me that if you're bigger and can beat someone then you get to be the boss. And that fear and pain were means of controlling someone.

Good for her. I hope it hurt the dumb son of a bitch.

And I hope he's good and humiliated by all the press, but usually people like that are not sufficiently self-reflective or insightful enough to feel humiliation from their own actions.

If he has a right to hit her, she has a right to hit him. If you can't overpower your kid, don't use corporal punishment, fgt.

The article also says that the father slapped her across the face first, and that it was only after he tried to spank her (in front of her friends) that she punched him.

So, he resorts to violence first and then tries to humiliate her in front of her friends. She may have been totally out of line as well, since we don't know the whole story, but his behavior as the supposed adult in the situation was completely wrong.

If I was 16 and in that situation (which I was, many times, and worse) I would have punched him too.

I'm glad Tuln posted a link from a second source, I'm not sure I trust a website called "Lipstick Alley" to be completely unbiased when discussing the issue of a girl punching a man.

No, of course that story isn't representative of the whole country, but apparently it did happen and it's a strange story. Could it happen somewhere else? - maybe, but I really can't imagine it happening where I'm from; here fathers may lock up their daughters in a basement for decades, but at least the girl wouldn't get arrested for defending herself against her father's assault.

^The most likely situation is that their neighbours overheard it and ended up calling the police, who then found out what happened from interviewing them and made an arrest.

The police don't have to wait for the "victim" to press charges.

Well, right, but the article doesn't even say where the "attack" took place. For all we know, she punched him in the middle of a shopping mall, and she got taken down by mall security.

The second source quoted the same article as the first, meaning that you didn't even read the second article and just assumed that since it was on a predominately female site that it was going to falsely try and make the man look worse through deceptive wording. Nice.

I question the reliability of the second article because A) it's an internet forum rather than a news organisation and B) because the forum appears to be aimed at women I would expect them to lean towards the girl in this case as I would expect a forum aimed at men to lean towards the father. There are bound to be numerous forums where people are saying he should have hit her harder.

I'm not defending the father here at all, I don't agree with physical punishment full stop. The police should have arrested both of them at the very least if these events transpired the way we are being led to believe. However, I am not going to make judgements on what has happened here based on one paragraph from a local news site and a bunch of forum posts speculating about what happened.

Are you not understanding that the forum in the OP's second link simply re-quoted - without alteration - the same article from the news organization in the first link? How do the exact same words suddenly become less reliable because they're on a female forum? The only one showing any bias here is you.

All you had to say was "we don't know enough about the situation for me to make a judgment yet" and it wouldn't have been an issue. Instead, you chose to insert your personal men as victims agenda into the mix without basis.

This is something everybody needs to be made clear about, a certain level of discipline like a slap on the arm or back of the legs now and again for doing something wrong IMO is acceptable but some parents do unfortunately go way too far when disciplining their kids which is why those kids end up resenting their parents. When I was about 8 I noticed one of my friends used to get disciplined quite often and very heavily and he turned out to be a dick and has been in and out of jail more times than I can count, clearly his parents went 'too far' with disciplining him whereas my parents did not go 'too far'.
I think people who are against 'spanking' kids are having a difficult time understanding that a certain degree is acceptable but over the top discipline (such as using a belt) is not acceptable. The Father in the article who slapped his daughter across the face, now THAT is unacceptable, I wouldn't dream of slapping one of my kids across the face.
