16-year-old girl arrested for hitting father who was spanking her

I posted a case like this before, it could bhe the same case. but that was a while ago. It could be a different case, but I think it's wrong. I mean at 16, she is pretty m,uch a grown woman and is too old to be spanked, yet she is the one who is arrested:
http://www.nwfdailynews.com/news/daughter-18428-belt-tried.html
FORT WALTON BEACH - A man who tried to discipline his 16-year-old daughter with a belt got punched for his trouble.
The girl was arrested.
The man told an Okaloosa County Sheriff's deputy his daughter became upset when she received a letter from her probation officer saying that she'd need to perform more community service hours. She became verbally abusive and began throwing things around the house.
The man picked up a belt and tried to discipline her. He got in one smack before she began punching, kicking and scratching him.
The deputy spotted two scratches on the man's head.
The girl admitted she punched her father and said it was because he'd tried to spank her with a belt.
She was charged with domestic violence and will appear in court June 29.

This is why Spanking should probably stop at a certain age. One day, the kid's are going to realize that they can beat the crap out of you. And if they can't, every house has at least one broom in it.

how did he not get arrested for belting her?

Cause it isn't illegal to spank your kids? And never should be.

The girl deserved to get arrested IMO, the father should have called the police the moment she started doing this:
She became verbally abusive and began throwing things around the house.

Some kids have to learn the hard way.

Sounds like he was trying to do his best and this kid was out of control.

If the girl has a probation officer, clearly she has some kind of history. There's probably more to the story than is immediately apparent.

Generally not a fan of crimes that change depending on who the victim is.

Take off your belt and start smacking someone under just about any other circumstance, and it's assault. You go to jail.

"But wait officer, this person I'm assaulting is my kid."

"Oh, well that's totally different. Beat away. Let us know if she tries to resist, then we'll arrest her."

If he'd called the police at this point...

She became verbally abusive and began throwing things around the house.

... I'd be sympathetic to him, but you don't go around hitting people and then whine when they hit you back.

If it had been me, I'd not have punched him. I'd have spanked him with a belt. In the face.

Discipline with a belt?!

At 16? How often did she usually get assaulted with A BELT before fighting back?

I, too, think the daughter likely had it coming, given the bit about probation and all that. However, I don't think it was any business of the police's whatsoever. When both parties are doing violence to each other you can't side with one and call the actions of the other domestic violence.

I don't think hitting someone with a belt should be called 'spanking'. It is belting and belting should be illegal.

I believe if you have to spank a child it should be done with an open hand. I really only approve of spanking if the child is too young to reason with and is doing something dangerous.

The biggest problem with what this man was doing he is teaching his daughter that it is OK for a woman to be belted if she is verbally abusive to a man, that she has to put up with assault. Should she have the guts to defend she herself willl get arrested.

I totally agree with Miss Chicken.

The girl is probably trouble. I don't agree with spanking, but I can understand that in some special circumstances it may be necessary. However, in this case the father was not "disciplining" her: not at 16, and sure as hell not with a fucking belt. He was abusing her. That should not be allowed.

Miss Chicken is right. I'm not opposed to corporal punishment, but a belt? At sixteen? That's two strikes against you right there, and she deserved to hit back.

You stop spanking somewhere between 8 and 10, 12 tops. No grown man should be spanking a sixteen-year old girl, even if it is his daughter, and using a belt is completely out of the question. What is this teaching the girl about older men abusing her and forcing her to submit to potentially-sexualized violence - let alone violence itself - against her body?

The fact she has a parole officer and is likely trouble herself doesn't make his actions right. If anyone should be arrested for domestic violence, it's the "father."

When you have to resort to spanking a 16 year old with a belt I guess you've seriously failed as a parent.

A man trying to spank or belt a 16 year old girl as punishment seems mighty strange to me. Personally I consider belting to be abuse also.

Sometimes its the only way to get through to teenagers these days, they need a good whipping.

Sometimes its the only way to get through to teenagers these days, they need a good whipping.

This statement is only one step from

"Sometimes its the only way to get through to women these days, they need a good whipping"

By the time she was 16 this father should have found another way to get through to his daughter. The fact that he still resorted to belting should show how bad he was at disciplining the child.

If this girl was living with a boyfriend (like some 16 years old do) would you say that the boyfriend would be in the right to hit her with a belt if she verbally abused him?
