10th anniversary of Homeworld

It was 10 years ago today that the computer game Homeworld was released. I don't play much computer or video games, but the sci-fi premise intrigued me and I got it a few years ago and loved it. Not only is it a great game, but I think it's a great science fiction story on it's own. The visuals IMO really give a sense of the vastness of space, and the musical score has an eerie mystical feeling that adds to the atmosphere. Anyone else here a Homeworld fan?

I always wanted to try it but when the game came out my computer couldnt handle it. Heres hoping that it gets a re-release someday

One of the best games I've ever played. Unique gameplay, and an absolutely terrific atmosphere. :techman:

Here's the intro to the original, still one of my favourite game openings:

Homeworld is one of the best games ever created.

I played HW multiplayer and became pretty excellent at it.

Then HW2 came out, and I became GOD LIKE at multiplayer. Nobody could beat me. HW2 had a more disappointing single player campaign, but it was twice as pretty as HW1 and the multiplayer was much better.

But yeah, HW is one of the greatest games of all time.

I still need to get ahold of the first game and HW: Cataclysm. I really enjoyed HW2.

Inspired by this thread, I re-installed the original today and started replaying it. I'd kind of forgotten how... hm... hauntingly beautiful it is. I think it's partly the design of the ships—the Kushan ships are so flowing and organic, it's hard not to spend all your time watching them just fly along. And even ten years later, it still looks amazing. Low poly count, sure, but visually arresting all the same.

As well, the whole return-to-Kharak sequence still gets me. "Adagio for Strings" has rarely been put to better use.

In honor of the anniversary, I have reposted a brief essay I wrote about it a few years ago.

Easily one of my favorite games of all time. "Hauntingly beautiful" describes it perfectly. There is such an epic timelessness to it that games before and since have failed to capture.

Absolutely wonderful game, and quite challenging. :techman:

the last pic I uploaded to my blog was with ships from HW2
magnificent games they are

link in my sig :D

It is awesome. I remember playing the demo and just being blown away at how pretty it was. Too bad I sucked at it but hey, it's still an awesome game.

Loved the series. I'm hoping THQ can come up with a 4th game in the series.

I tried playing it for awhile. The computer skirmish was fun, since you could use all sorts of vessels. But I never really got the hang of the campaign and forgot about it, honestly.

If you didn't play the campaign, you basically missed the game's best qualities! Don't get me wrong, it had a solid combat system and everything, but the story and atmosphere are what really "sold" it for me.

Played through HW2 several years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Then played it multiplayer with my brothers over a LAN.

For all of you multiplayer gurus what is the best way to play HW2 multiplayer? The plethora of mods available were kind of overwhelming, and all I wanted was a game that made frigates and destroyers viable and useful vessels(as opposed to Battle Cruiser fodder) and emphasized three dimensional tactics.

I'd love to see THQ make another Homeworld game. Especially with all the lessons the learned from Company of Heroes (IMO the best RTS ever made) and Dawn of War II.
