I like the notion it's a lost artifact from another space fairing race .. like a runaway light sail aimlessly wondering space...
I think we should start looking for space artifacts traveling through our solar system...

Honestly I would love it if it was something old and forgotten that someone let drift and it wandered into our solar system, but I don't think it is anything special.
There would be a lot of Kaboom going on and oh dear Uncle Sam would have competition from other nations for more kaboom

In the first book, the north of Italy was wiped out by an asteroid impact so by the time the Rama cylinder turned up they were prepared for detecting and intercepting large objects. 'Oumuamua did appear to exhibit anomalous acceleration but we're not sure about the cause. It also exhibited several other properties that are not typical of asteroids or comets.
