CANCELLED

Trek fans have been terribly lucky. We've had a glut of Trek to pick and choose from. Of course with so much you will get to a point where even fans are seeing that its too much. I know who you're talking about and they have a right to complain. To try to get the show cancelled. In the end, he probably had no affect on the final decision but if TPTB would listen to the criticism (not just from Trek fans, it was coming from everywhere) about what was wrong with this series early on, this cancellation might have been avoided.

So, if Trek never appears again, that's not a bad thing. Because what takes its place will learn from Trek's lessons. There are years and years of material to see where mistakes were. I really believe that if there is a next time a sizable portion of the fanbase turns its back on the current product, TPTB will look a little more closely. When ratings keep heading south, they'll attempt more than just a costume change for its current hot chick. At least that's what I want for Trek's future. Not just more of the same with the same lack of understanding what's wrong with the franchise. Its tired because those behind it are tired. And Trek fans aren't something to take for granted. They might like SG-1 enough to turn that channel again.

I just hope some in the fanbase keep their heads and don't send death threats to LM. That always gives us a bad name.

Enterprise is in the 3º season here.

But it was not surprise.

The only good thing in this show was Manny Coto.

Trek needs a break.
And maybe come back in 02 or 03 years with a good project, without B&B.

 

Brent, there is constructive and destructive criticism. I am quite capable of differentiating between the two. There was a lot of destructive criticism of Enterprise.

I have given up on Stargate SG-1 and find Stargate Atlantis silly. I no longer watch either. But I don't go around the various boards calling for the cancellation of either show nor do I post negative threads about either.

You are right about not reading the forums if I don't want to read the destructive criticism.

I just won't care the next time.

 

Damn straight. People have the notion that Trek fans will eat up anything with Trek in the title...and today is proof that this is not the case.

*sigh* This is one of only two shows in my whole life that I looked forward to every week. Oddly enough, that other show got four seasons as well, but that season was utter crap, and I was more than relieved to find it had been cancelled.

Still...it wasn't as big a franchise as Star Trek is. I'm sure Entertainment Tonight will do a story about it's cancellation sometime in the next two week...I will be highly surprised if ENT goes off the airwaves without some sort of recognition outside the Internet.

 

I'm with you 100%, cubbie. I've been watching Trek since around 1970 and it's time to set aside an old friend. The hopefulnees that I once loved about Star Trek is gone. Now everything has to be 'dark, gritty, dirty, etc'. Star Trek may not be dead, but my loyalty to it is.

Well, I have to figure what to do on Friday nights.

people forget that both DS9 and TNG were crap their first two seasons as well, and only came into their prime in season four. I do hope that someone over at SciFi or Spike is paying attention and snaps this up.

 

What would be really funny is to see a network like NBC (that ran original broadcasts of TOS) pick it up for a season or two.

I agree, T'Bonz...I think that's what I'm really gonna miss...I'm finally home on the nights ENT is on, and the show's cancelled. The running commentary is so much fun. No one else in my family liked ENT, so it's nice to have people to share it with as it happens...ah, well, I still have the Lost running commentaries on Wednesday...the rare times I'm home.

Oh, yeah, I'm going to miss all the Reed Rage and Tucker worship threads. *goes to put Les Moonves on the burning altar to the Great Tucker God* The Great Tucker God demands a sacrifice!!!

 

Actually, I've been pretty disappointed with what's been on television this year, and this is really one of the first years in a while that I've been able to watch on a regular basis.

Between all the lolly-pantsing that the FCC has caused the studios and such to tuck their heads under their asses, well, has probably stifled creativity somewhat.

There were some great things on television in the past years -- The Wire, for one (HBO) was an outstanding show that got cancelled for a variety of reasons, good and bad. Enterprise wasn't the best show on tv by any means, but it was coming in on its own -- a few hours after the news hit, I've gone from shock to agreement, because I felt it coming a long time ago.

And take this from someone who's watched a LOT of television shows (although not all legally). Shows come, shows go. We're in a bit of a dry spell right now, but hopefully a new generation will come about with some wonderful television ideas. And we'll be there to watch when they finally get off of this reality craze.

 

Well, I guess the only thing we can do now is to really push for another station to pick up the show next season.

It would be ironic, but it ain't gonna happen. A major network wouldn't go near a show with ENT's ratingsand production cost. Even a network like SciFi wouldn't (They need Sky One's help to make 13 eps of BSG). I can see a major net like NBC or CBS airing a Star Trek mini-series or TV movie.

 

Right now, the Entertainment page on Yahoo News links to three stories about Enterprise's cancellation. Sounds pretty negative, I know. But at least someone has noticed.

This gets attention, and even bad publicity is better than none. Maybe some people will check out the DVDs or syndicated reruns out of curiosity.

No one would notice another season of Enterprise - it would be more declining ratings, and more of the same old same old from the industry's POV. Follow up with another series next season? Again, more of the same. Few would notice, fewer would care. Sadly, it seems that it doesn't matter how good Enterprise gets at this point -- it's just not going to draw the audience that would make it worthwhile for TPTB to keep investing in it.

But when Series VI, or another movie, or whatever project is announced in a few years, it'll actually be news. There will be buzz. And if the project is actually, you know, good, that'll be just the shot in the arm the franchise needs. (Let's hope Paramount keeps Manny Coto's number on file.)

 

This has truely been a shock. I really didn't expect the news so quickly. I hopped on to TrekToday as I normally do throughout the day ... saw the article heading about something to do with getting Enterprise to another network in the wake of cancellation ... at this point I still hadn't fully realized it yet -- that is, till I saw the previous article: UPN Cancels Star Trek: Enterprise.

I'm slowly starting to realize it and what it means, and I'm sure I won't fully for a while. The show had it's ups and downs, and I personally enjoyed S3 and S4 very much. It really is a shame to put an end to it right when it's really improving and surpassing our expectations for the show and modern Trek in general.

But as others have said, it is definately nice for it to be going out with a bang (unlike the slow and gradual death that SG-1 will probably suffer from ).

Enterprise could be the savior with it's "sacrifice." Maybe (hopefully) the upperPTB will clean house for the next Trek incarnation.

The thing is, the second seasons of those show were an improvement over the first, especially with TNG. I think the ratings could have been salvageable had Bermaga not gone the T&A route and done the types of stories that we are getting today. "Observer Effect" could have been done in season two, as could have something with the Tellarites and Andorians. TPTB could have done way more character stroeis than they did.

Looking back at my knowledge of TNG, I don't think those stories were that much fresher when they were aired either. The fans merely cared more about the TNG cast than for ENT, and rightfully so, IMO. The first time Travis has gotten the spotlight since mid season two, and he was under an alien influence.

 

This is very sad news indeed. Unfortunately it is not unexpected. Many of us have known for a while that Enterprise (due in large part to inadequate creators and producers ie. Berman and Braga) has been less than what I as a Star Trek fan expect from a Star Trek production.

I think that there has been improvement this season with B&B getting out of the way. Unfortunately when the show is in a hospice situation there is only so much you can do before the vital organs begin to shutdown.

I guess Berman can feel proud and happy. He's contributed to the demise of the TV franchise the same way he saw to the demise of the movie franchise.
