I'm surprised that there's not more conversation about the Kryptonian backstory. After all, in a movie that's being celebrated as uniquely faithful to the comic books and the character's heritage, it's one hell of a divergence.
We've seen things like that before. Smallville also had a vague message about him possibly conquering Earth as well. I wouldn't read it as them being evil. Could be a suggestion from his parents. Maybe in their mind him ruling Earth would lead to the planet doing better overall. Kara didn't seem evil. Just a drunk party girl.

Interesting they didn't say how Krypton was destroyed. Maybe they'll go with another route and have a Frieza-like alien destroy it this time. Brainiac for instance. Could play into the Supergirl movie.

It worked for me, but I’m also active on a dedicated comics forum, and I can tell you a lot of those guys hated it. It’s been my experience that many comics fans can be extremely hidebound in how they like these characters and stories portrayed.

Except that it wasn't. That was a red herring, playing humorously on audience expectations.

He flat-out calls Supes a dummy for falling for the "Luthorania" ploy. "It was never anything but a way to get to you."

Cart before the horse.

Both things were definitely happening, but one of those things was U2 in concert, and the other was a comedian to warm up the audience.

Matthew Perry should have been Superman.

Making Jor-El and Lara assholes is a much less problematic change than doing the same thing to the Kents.

Good thing nobody would ever do that.

When did they make the message?

Mom and Dad could have been talking about Victorians or Romans.

Although someone at the end had ftl travel... But the reason Krypton dies is because they have a shitty space program, so maybe Clark got ftl off the Martians or Kanjar Ro?

Just jotting down some more observations of things I loved...

The way Gunn handled the backstory of the film was perfect. Simple and elegant. 10/10, no notes.

This is the most believable Lex Luthor I've ever seen, thanks to current events. The culmination of his arc was a big driver of what made this emotionally satisfying.

At least a couple moments where I got choked up, thanks to the score hitting things home. The fucking magic of cinema.

More Edi Gathegi, please. I knew he was good since first seeing him on House all those years ago. The man's ready to lead a Mr. Terrific film series.

I'm so fucking happy that Gunn embraced saturated color! Movies these days are increasingly drab and drained of color, and this was a story that absolutely required color.

Loved, loved, loved Ma and Pa Kent were both alive and kicking here. That was a key difference in Gunn's approach to the character versus Synder. This is the Superman we absolutely need right now. In this moment.

There is definitely a precedent of this before this movie. John Byrne made a Krypton that was very alien and more advanced than Earth. Not just technology but biological too, While he presented Jor El as bit of a romantic who broke Kryptonian traditions of the time of its destruction, he was still of a different species and culture. There are a few Elseworlds of that era that have Jor El and Lara surviving Krypton’s destruction. On Earth they treated Humans the way many colonial powers and missionaries did to lower subjects they are “helping”. Forcing them to change to Kryptonian standards. What we saw here very consistent with that.

I read spoilers before seeing movie and I expected Jor-El and Lara’s message to be much harsher and “EVIL”. Most of the spoilers and online discussion latches on to Luthor’s description of it. I expected Lara to actually say “harem”. Is there much difference? They thought Kal-El would help the barbaric savage natives live up Kryptonian ideals.
