Back to ENT and I'm saving "A Night In Sickbay"! Despite Archer being a massive baby/having a tantrum throughout pretty much the entire episode (which I find quite amusing, and also mildly understandable as his best friend's on death's door), his love and concern for Porthos makes this worthy of saving to me. Plus we get to see more of how capable Hoshi is (catching bats this time, rather than translating), and Vaughn Armstrong's back as the supremely snotty Kreetassan.

The Maquis Part One is full of interesting morally grey scenes, nicely setting up the cliffhanger where we see Hudson is a Maquis. It's a good example of showing how DS9 dealt with the better than the show they were created for.

I'll go with The Maquis, Part II. Whilst Berney Casey wasn't the strongest guest actor DS9 had, I still think it was a very effective story. Sisko's having to defend a Cardassian outpost against his friend and other Starfleet officers was gripping.

There's nothing outrageous about this one:

Odd, but true since this is TOS...

As metaphor and allusion, and the story's got oodles of them, and of which some are not as easy to spot, the idea of being forced into "a simpler time" under pain of crippling forcefield* and resoundingly objected to by competing-overlord Captain Kirk is rather fun. But Kirk, the mightiest micromanager of all time, knows everything everywhere for every reason** and knows that the grass is always greener on the other side*** and doing nothing but wander around in togas to a scantily-clad yummy who does nothing but threaten bellicosity that they do nothing but sing hollow praises. because, unlike real-life Greece, there are no nearby enemies or anything else to trifle the notion of paradise, whatever that is, but there's always a balance****...

High-concept* or not, it was surprisingly easy to roll along with, the ability of the alien of the week being able to exert a sufficient threat. And without the need of androids to assist. Take that, Norman!

It would have been nicer if the story did a little more exposition to explain why Kirk is so uppity, but that is also the episode's strength: The audience can simmer over it and come up with all sorts of ideas and that's part of the fun!

* Of course, being the 1960s, where "high-concept" is as much a figurative term as it is a literal one, since said forcefield is shaped like a gigantic green hand*****

...now there's a missed opportunity from "Encounter at Farpoint", but by 1987 in our universe, audiences wanted a big orange chainlink fence instead... but TOS managed to bypass what otherwise would have been made as "camp". There's bound to be a reason***?
