Re: Picard not asking the TNG crew... We know that Riker has a family. We don't know the status of Geordi or Worf. I will say, Picard's reactions to the mention of Worf in the previous episode might have been telling. It makes me wonder if there is some animosity between them. That's admittedly speculation and like in "All Good Things...", Worf was not particularly open to the idea of helping him until Picard threw out the overplayed "honor" card. Raffi on the other hand is portrayed as a character who (1) is going to be unbelievably honest with Picard and (2) as stated in the episode, sees connections where others can't. Riker, Geordi and Worf would put loyalty over all things. They would follow orders, probably pretty blindly, and not work for doing what Picard wanted and not what was needed. Maybe that's not what Picard needs at this point in time. That Raffi went along on this mission shows that while she probably does have her own interests in this mission, but this idea that there isn't some care that she has for Picard obviously just isn't true. You can see it in her face.

It's not, as far as Picard knows when he chooses strangers over E-D pals.

But as far as he knows, it's not at any later timepoint, either. So somebody wants his head? Well, it's old and bald. It's not the Federation. For Picard, this is just personal. When the chateau gets raided, it turns out that those with an axe to grind with him are powerful. But it's still personal. And nothing suggests that the Federation would be threatened by any outcome of the duel between Picard and those who don't like him.

He couldn't. Which is exactly why he feels guilty about letting her die. That's the only reason he's on this hunt originally anyway: to either confront or then just outpace an organization that killed Dahj, with considerable but not Federation-threatening resources.

How is that penalty for failure? And there's no reason to think that success would stop people from coming to kill him. Quite to the contrary, those people would probably be even more pissed off.

But as said many times, this comes after

Nope, and nope. Those things did not happen, at least not in this episode yet.

When Picard made that statement, there was an episode to go till things really turned from "embarrassing personal quest" to "risky mission to expose a galactic conspiracy". In that latter episode, we learn why Picard would wish to keep his distance, what with him already having dragged down at least Musiker with his personal pride and histrionics. We also finally learn that he might be in over his head. And from trailers and previews, we know that he now will summon more help, including the sword-wielding elf and apparently also the Trois. We just don't know what sort of help he's hoping to get from those.

Picard doesn't want to ask anyone to put their life on the line purely out of friendship and loyalty to him.

He knows that if Raffi helps him, it will be DESPITE her feelings about him.

Raffi has long believed that there is a Romulan infiltration in Starfleet. This is her chance to do something about it.

I mean, true. But I was going for a more in-universe explanation. :p The TNG cast is certainly getting up there. The youngest of the main seven is Burton at 62.

OK, I just watched that scene again. Hugh said "the only Romulans ever assimilated, as far as I know" So I guess the as far as I know bit gives them an out.

Maybe Hugh told him that because that's what the Romulans working on the cube told him and that's the "official" word.

How do we know that? How do we possibly have enough information about how Starfleet handles these kinds of situations to judge whether or not "it's BS?"

    We don't.

You don't like it. Peace. That doesn't make it completely and utterly ridiculous though. It just makes it something you don't like.

There was at least one synth on board that ship and it crippled the cube.

That fits with the current idea that there may be something not entirely natural with some of those that came from Vulcan, this indicates specifically that it is the Romulans we should be looking at closely rather than the Vulcans as they would have been encountered and assimilated by now.

Not surprise that no Romulans had been assimilated until that one ship, it seems the Borg successfully assimilated some of the others as we see them in the episode but there was obviously something else on board pretending to be or believing itself to be Romulan as well.

Its possible that it was a test, whoever is creating the synths arranged for that Romulan ship to be detected and attacked by the Borg to see what would happen, using a small ship with a relatively small number of normal Romulans as a control.

In the lap of squalor I assure you.
Star Fleet is like picking players for Dodge ball in middle school.

3 great players in a class, and then 25 Ralph Wiggims trying to get a toilet slip.

    Also...

    What was her rank?

    Captain?

A Captain can only work for an Admiral, if they are not given their own command, unless they get demoted like Decker was.

The higher in the chain of command you get, the less people there are to work for.

For all we know she was placed on that ship to get rid of her as one faction or another may not like what she knows.

Its not like she had the knowledge of how their cloaking tech works or anything like that which would matter more to the Romulans.

Then again perhaps she was placed on that ship precisely because of her background, or alternatively she is the synth that crippled the ship, how many moves ahead are the real masterminds working on, is this some grand plan to force the truth to come out or is it simply the result of random chance which is the wrecker of many a cunning plan.

Hard to say at this point because we don't know all the players yet and until we do we cant know what outcome they are all playing for.
