"Alien" is an "Arthouse" movie.

Not sure what was meant there, with the quotes, but Alien was a mainstream studio feature with a substantial budget and was shown in first-run theaters like Rocky 2, Meatballs, The Muppet Movie etc. And quite successfully.

I have fond memories of taking a very cute girl to see Aliens, the first R-rated movie I'd been to without "a parent or adult guardian," and wondering if we'd get in because I was 16 and she was 15. But even though it was fun I didn't think it was operating on the same level as Alien. The original is a masterpiece and a science fiction film landmark, and though I don't really have anything against Aliens, I haven't really felt the need to watch it in 20 years or so.

I didn't like "3" much, never saw the rest.

I love Rocky IV, but yeah that is slightly insulting. If you think Aliens is simply a dumb fun action movie, you really don't know what you're talking about.

Wouldn't say dumb but certainly it's artistic merits aren't so far away from dumb as to justify it applying for the position of professor of cunning at Oxford university

It's a fun movie

I think Alien Resurection is more the arthouse movie.

I can't really watch the original--I already know how it goes, but Resurrection going into some weird territory...that I really like--that and Brad Dourif of course--though his best role was in Exorcist III, which I also like over the original.

You count Prometheus? I thought it wasn't strictly supposed to be part of the series.

If I added it, it would tie with Alien3.

Back in the 80s or 90s, I probably would have said Aliens, just because of what a frenetic and intense action movie it seemed at the time. But looking at it now I can't help but drop it down a few points because of the dated quality of the effects and cheesy gung-ho characters. While Alien now looks more timeless and gorgeous than ever.

I share the sentiment of some others here- Aliens is a really great movie, but, Alien is art. 36 years later, it still impresses.

Prometheus is technically a stand alone movie, but I thought it was better than Alien 3 but not as good as Aliens.

Alien
It's still one of my all time favourite films and not just in the horror/Sci-Fi genre but overall.

Aliens is a great film as well but it never quite managed to topple the first film from it's pedestal in my opinion.

Never really bothered with 3 or Resurrection and if I'm honest I've never really been interested to invest the time to sit down and watch them, but maybe I should reconsider for Alien 3 but more out of curiosity than anything else.

If we're going to expand to through AvP films I though the first was dull and can't recall much anything about any of the characters so they didn't made much of an impression. Requiem I haven't seen but from what I've read and been told by others I'm not missing anything apparently

Slightly off-topic I did really enjoy Predators. As pure entertainment it was quite fun and I liked the idea of the planet-wide game reserve which did seem like something a Predator race might have.

Plus the opening where Royce wakes up free-falling through the air was a great way to start a film!

I love the first and 2nd movie.......

The 3rd is OK and a GOOD ENDING to that movie... (I dont see a need for the 4th +)

I enjoy them all for different reasons. The original is a true masterpiece of cinematic horror, and I rank it at #1 in the series because I don't think any of the others are on the same level. I find "Aliens" to be slightly overrated, but as pure sci-fi action it's hard to beat. "3" and "Resurrection" are both flawed, but underappreciated in my opinion. The AvP films are mostly fluff, but fun (and I can't bring myself to hate on anything that has Lance Henriksen, because he's awesome). "Prometheus" was merely okay.

Alien would be my top choice because it's one of the quintessential SF horror movies and so well done. It has spawned an entire universe which has spread to so many medíums that it has become a cornerstone of pop culture.

The sequel Aliens also breaks the rule of sequels inevitably being worse than the original movie. It's not that fair to directly compare it to Alien because they are tonally very different.

While Alien was the silent, low key horror movie in the same style as Jaws it nevertheless built up to the finale whereas Aliens is its loud brother who grabs you almost from the beginning and shakes you around.

I love both movies for what they are.. Alien is amonst the top horror movies and Aliens is one of the kings of action cinema.

The rest is forgettable.. Alien 3 was a rehash of Alien with a similar setting, Alien 4 is whatever they wanted to do and failed and the less said about the AvP movies the better (they should just have filmed the first AvP comicbook, that was one hell of a story).

Both Alien & Aliens are in my top 20 but Aliens nick the best of the franchise for being the perfect action movie and showing not all sequels have to suck ;)

I've never been a HUGE fan of this series, and had only seen each of them once.

For YEARS, I said the first was my favorite, but I tried watching it again recently and I had a hard time getting into it. It's good, but not as good as I remembered.

Aliens, I considered inferior, but now I like it more than the first.

Alien 3, I saw in the theater. Me and my friends laughed our ASSES OFF the whole movie. We were in high school and thought the way the British guys were yelling expletives was HILARIOUS. I tried rewatching it recently and couldn't get into it either.

Alien Resurrection, I saw when it first came out on cable when it was still a "newer" film, and I remember liking it more than the 3rd, but it has been so long now that I couldn't tell you if I'd still enjoy it.

Haven't seen any of the AvP.

Anyway, I voted for Aliens.

I saw the second before I saw the first.

I think they're both great but Aliens is really in my wheelhouse.

For me it is such a photo finish between Alien and Aliens...but Aliens wins by a nose.

Unmentioned in the poll, but I'll include it: I loved "Prometheus". Same universe, set well before Alien, but a nice branching of the lore to deal more with the Space Jockey/Engineers.

Alien 3 disappointed me, but I didn't think it was a bad film, and it later grew on me....especially the extended cut on dvd/blu-ray.

Alien Resurrection was a major disappointment, although I can still watch it without flinching.

AvP and AvP:R are two of those rare instances where I bother at all about "canon" (personal or otherwise). To me, they are alternate universe stories for the Alien Universe because they monkey with the timelines.
