Some of them were obviously more popular than others, but you always have someone with a unique opinion out there.

I think that I'll probably be in the majority but my clear favorite is Aliens though it works best as an extension of Alien. Although I also enjoy (to some degree) the other movies, they are not part of my "head canon" for the series.

Alien is a superior piece of art but Aliens is a ton of fun. Aliens is the Rocky IV of the Alien films

The comparison is simply not fair. The four original Alien films were made in different eras of cinema, by different directors, who's styles were utterly unique. I see fantastic elements and fault in all of them, and judge them all accordingly.

So, they all rank equally high for me, and the one I watch depends greatly on my mood.
Alien for a dose of classic horror.
Aliens when I need awesome action and testosteron.
Alien 3 for something a bit darker, and moody.
Alien Resurrection when I want to watch something slightly silly, with bit of macabre, cool oneliners and Ron Effing Pearlman.

The AvP movies I consider pure popcornflicks. Stupid entertaintment with beer and snacks.

Before I clicked on the thread, I was going to suggest that it be a poll with two options: Alien and Aliens.

I have a hard time picking between the first two. I loved Aliens as a kid and saw it before Alien. Watched it so much I had much of it burned right into my brain. To the point that it became distracting because I started to notice how much of the movie was created straight from the editing. Much of the action is created just from the cuts. Plus, I love all the Marines and their personalities.

Got older and started to appreciate Alien. Saw Alien in widescreen and really came to appreciate what an incredible movie it is. I don't even like seeing it cropped to 1:85 on some of the HD channels. Alien has the tense thriller aspect played to perfection and just looks brilliant.

So I'm torn, they're both great but in apple and oranges ways. I'll have to come back to a final decision.

I like 3 and 4 to different degrees but they can't measure up to the first two.

Aliens is one of my favourite three movies, along with Star Wars and The Terminator.

Strange that I prefer the big budget action movie follow up to Alien, yet prefer Terminator to T2.

The Alien movies go downhill in order. First was phenomenal, second was great, third okay, fourth shite. AVP brought the quality back up, then it went back to the toilet with Requiem.

I find worthwhile aspects in all of first three, but they really are all very different in nature, & hard to compare. I mean let's face it. How could any series be uniform with such varied directors as Ridley Scott, James Cameron, & David Fincher. My personal favorite to watch is probably Aliens, but the one I find to be the best artistically is the original

Apparently, Neill Blomkamp is spearheading a 5th, with plans for Weaver to return

The original is my favorite by far. Aliens has its moments, but it doesn't do a ton for me. The original I find to be mind-blowing, though.

Alien is a superior piece of art

True. The film arguably hovers around the top 10 greatest sci-fi films.

but Aliens is a ton of fun. Aliens is the Rocky IV of the Alien films
Now that's an insult to Aliens, as Rocky IV was the textbook film under the category: "overblown and shallow films from the 80s".

"Alien" is an "Arthouse" movie. Aliens is a "Cinema 50" movie. If forced to choose, I would have to go with "Aliens". Every line in that movie is a "line", like "BGlazing Saddles". More funner than "Alien?" Sure? Better? Depends on perspective and preference.

I love Rocky IV, but yeah that is slightly insulting. If you think Aliens is simply a dumb fun action movie, you really don't know what you're talking about.
