Ezri

I have no issue w Ezri or how she was played. deBoer did a fine job. However, I was kind of surprised a new supporting character was introduced so late in the game with no hope of ever really developing her character. I think it might have been more advisable to let the Dax character die and concentrate on preestablished characters who could have benefited from more screen time, like Jake Sisko, Keiko (if they had made her more likable), Leeta or Garak. Also, the Breen were an intriguing but poorly developed race and the breathing room allowed by one less main cast character might have helped develop the Breen.

I thought she was fantastic and Ms. deBoer did an amazing job walking into an impossible situation and making a character her own.
More importantly, she made the character interesting.

For the first six season, Dax was a total dud, uninteresting and a waste of screen time. It was clear the writers didn't like writing for her or knew what to do with her half the time--the oft cited number of attempts they tried to reinvent her being the most obvious evidence.

Excellent point. Ms. Farrell was a very limited actress and despite the writer's efforts to include her in stories she had almost no screen presence.

Look at the kind of episodes Ezri was given though in the last season.

Field Of Fire, one of the worst episodes in the series.
Prodigal Daughter, a boring misfired attempt to develop Ezri's pre-Dax backgorund.
Afterimage, a contrived attempt to force their contrived counselor role for Ezri to be necessary, a 'Worf is a dick, then decides to be less of a dick' story almost as bad as Hippocratic Oath, and a cheesy 'I'm afraid I can't rescind your resignation, I never processed it in the first place' ending.

Ezri was awesome in the final ten episode stretch in the series, but until then the writers seemed determined to use her badly.

Worse than Let He Who Is Without Sin or Meridian?

If you read the background in the DS9 Companion or at Memory Alpha, you will see that this was a last minute rewrite, originally having been a Sisko episode. It's hard to pin it on the character.

I loved Ezri. I found her so much more interesting and likable than Jadzia. Jadzia's attitude just rubbed me the wrong way I guess. I liked that Ezri arrived with doubts about herself. She was young, still in school, and got a symbiont she didn't ask for dumped in her lap. That's a lot to deal with and I enjoyed watching her learn to be more confident in herself as S7 went on and face things even when she wasn't.

I think de Boer is a much better actress with much more range of emotion than Farrell. Unfortunately, we only really got a glimpse of her. If they had cast her as Jadzia in the 1st place....

Oh....I loved DS9. I liked Terry Farrell. I just liked Ezri more. :)

DS9 really caught my attention when
A...they got the Defiamt
B...thr Feds went back to war with the Klingons.

But if Nicole deBoer were in DS9 from the start, I'd've been hooked from the off. :)

Yeah, I loved Ezri. She was my fave between the two. (I guess I have a thing for cute, pixie haired chicks...like the blonde pixie haired chick bridge officer in Star Trek Into Darkness that was briefly seen, and had one good close up when Kirk pleaded to Marcus for the lives of his crew.. ). :)

I love that chick too. Insurrection had one briefly shown on the bridge during the battle/pursuit of Enterprise.

I love Ezri Dax. I wish we were given at least two seasons with her. More Ezri-time would have made her relationship with Bashir more believable.

It's kind of a missed opportunity for the show. They've got one season left to go? Fine! Do something that helps develop the plot or actually is the result of the story so far. This was a serialized show, after all.

Why not have the first ever Romulan cast member? They could have made her a representative of the Tal Shiar and that would have led to much interesting interaction with Garak and the others. They could write her in as an advisor that the Romulans insisted on having on board allied stations.

They could have made her a refugee with information on the Dominion.
They could have made her as a hit-girl who came to collect on Quark and ended up sticking around for some reason.
They could have made her into a kind of genetically engineered wunderkind like Bashir, except she was an expert in tactics or something.
They could have made her an observer of the prophets or any near omnipotent race that the galaxy seems to be full of.

Basically I would have liked it if they did anything except to rehash a character that they were done with. If they weren't done exploring Dax then they already had all the opportunities they would have ever needed.

I preferred Ezri to any of those options for the simple fact that she was connected to the rest of the characters, not a completely brand new person.
