Lincoln Enterprises bumper slides

If I'm not mistaken the "Next Voyage" titles began with the original NBC airing of S3. There is a consistent very brief music cue accompanying the Enterprise "whoosh" visual (by the way, where is that cue on the LLL score set?) well-edited on every trailer.

There were a few, a couple of them I know of right off-hand are "Deflection", "Listless Spock" and "Check-Up" from The Paradise Syndrome.

I think all of the examples of "Next Week" clips I have seen are from S1, so I have no visual proof that this was the case with S2 as well (and I've never seen "Next Week" used on S3), but based on the existing trailers it makes sense this was how it worked.

I have been looking at the episodic credits at UCLA (basically, three sheets of paper listing the exact titles in size, spelling, and timing that would appear on each episode), which include the "NEXT WEEK" titles.

"Who Mourns for Adonais?" and "The Ultimate Computer" both have the "NEXT WEEK" title treatment, not the "NEXT VOYAGE" version that would appear in syndication.

I haven't looked at the episodic credits for any season three episodes yet.

I'm curious where these film frames came from. Were they from actual episodes or maybe unused footage or extra copies? I wonder why anyone would butcher original Star Trek episodes.

Unused footage that was trimmed out during editing -- literally the leavings on the cutting room floor, like the beginning of a shot with the clapboard being used and the actors waiting for action to be called, or extra frames shaved off of the start or end of a shot. Probably some unused or failed takes in there as well. I gather that Roddenberry collected and saved those discarded bits of film and sold them as memorabilia. A lot of them are behind-the-scenes shots with clapboards in view or actors out of character before or after a take.

The cut-up frames from Lincoln Enterprises actually came from whole-episode "work prints" that had been assembled by the film editor when figuring out how to put the final show together, plus unused out-takes, clapboard shots, and test footage. It was all in the film vault that GR and Majel evidently robbed (per the story in Inside Star Trek by Solow and Justman).

We can thank our lucky stars that GR had no way to monetize the original camera negative reels, or he might have stolen those too and cut them up. Then Star Trek on home video would be made from ragged syndication prints.

That makes me think of those clear plastic bags with three comic books in them. The kind where you didn't know what comic was in the middle until you opened it...only to discover it was an issue of Devil Dinosaur or something.

It took decades to ease the pain of Kirby's low period...and now--like being hit by lightning--you drag Devil Dinosaur out of the past.

I get a sense that not a lot of people realize that in Season One of STAR TREK, the "Next Voyage" screen with the Enterprise in view was not used on its original NBC run. Those were edited onto the first season trailers during the syndication run. When NBC was promoting what was coming up in next week's show, they simply superimposed the words "NEXT WEEK" as the trailer began. One of my slides illustrates that:

As to these slides, this is great stuff. It also crossed my mind that these Lincoln Enterprises clips may possibly be the last source for new images from the time of the original series. They are treasures!
