The Down Under Lounge

^On number 3, they picked it up from the last Labor government who also wanted to pass mandatory ISP data retention laws.

The last government was a bit all over the place on their Internet policies. On one hand they wanted to give everyone access to top quality Internet to better the country, and on the other they wanted to filter it and have access to all your data for a few years...you know, just in case.

In case what?
In case they wanted to use it in evidence against you later if you visited a porn site or something?

Look I'm not against the government retaining stats on things but they shouldn't be able to link it to any person unless everyone is allowed that access.

I've seen some court cases where they tracked people accessing child porn or bomb making sites after the fact. I think the loss of everyone's freedom is too big a price to pay for these few cases.

And thanks Labor for suggesting such a thing and to the Libs for running with it.

How much extra is it going to cost each Australian to use the ISPs with these extra costs of retaining data.?

Pity the poor'spy' who might end up searching through my online footprint if the government ever thinks there is a need for me to be investigated. They would be bored shitless.

Have theby made up their minds yet if it is our IP addresses or the IP addresses of the site we visit that they want to keep?

As I understand it the metadata would have a record your IP address, but not that of the sites you visit. Metadata isn't meant to cover "content" and I think websites you visit are counted as content.

Of what use is this, do you know.

Part of the information relating to an IP address would be when it was active, how long for, and from where.

So whats the point of all this then...Just to find out when and how long every 'person'/company is on the internet?
Have they 'revealed' the reason yet?

The point is they have no clue.

It won't tell them diddly squat.

ADSL and cable internet connections are often left on even if even if the computer isn't (especially with the proliferation of mobile devices).

So all they would see is just how many internet connections are left on 24/7

This current bunch of idiots seems hell bent on out-ludditing Richard Alston.

Apparently they're already using information stored currently at ISPs in court cases.

I'm certain its not just metadata they're using in these court cases.

Interesting times in NSW.

The ICAC is now raking through the Liberal Party, and local members all around me are now under siege. I can't believe the level of corruption. And it could have ea positive upshot, as far as I'm concerned.

I work in Newcastle, and the Council is going to close the main line into the city, instead having the main station at Broadmeadow with a few suburban trains going from Hamilton and Wickham. You can find out all about it online of you want, but in short it's a naked land grab organised by the Newcastle mayor Geoff McCloy, to turn that strip of line into high rise accommodation. McCloy is also a former developer, and may well have interests in it still. Talk about giving the keys of the henhouse to the fox.

But ICAC has heard McCloy slipped one of the local Lib members $10,000 in an envelope. So it won't end well for him, and hopefully it will undo the deal over the rail line.

A big disappointment for me was local Labor member Jodi McKay losing her seat, mostly due to a member of her own party setting up interference to line his pocket, that was Joe Tripodi, who I think is scum, and paid for by developer Nathan Tinkler. She opposed a coal loader Tinkler wanted built. She lost her seat... and the coal loader went ahead, until Tinkler messed up big time. Tripodi and his ilk have traduced the reputation of the Labor Party in this state. She only lost by 1800 votes. Makes me angry that I have no viable alternative to the Libs to vote for.

The State political parties are jokes.

You think NSW is bad. They're the epitome of decorum compared to say Queensland or WA. Drunken car crashes, touching up the ladies in parliament, having your wife on the senate ticket.

It's all rather ironic given that royalty commission into the union corruption and the ICAC in N.S.W were aimed at hitting Labor and it's digging up just as much dirt on the Libs.

Guess Abbott through Howard did okay with his RC into the unions but forgot about Costigan in the early 80s which blew the whistle on corporate tax avoidance and corruption within public prosecutors offices under federal and state conservative governments.

Among those 27 problems

19. Most bands’ definition of ‘World Tour’ means that Australia doesn’t even make the cut half the time.

If it is an Australian wide tour Tasmania doesn't make the cut 95% of the time.

As a poor person who does not drive a car I don't think I am that qualified to speak on Smoking Joe's latest statement "Poor people don't own cars or if they do they don't drive far".

However I do know many poor people who do need cars especially friends who do not live in a city.

That's an absurb statement. The wrongness of it is so obvious to me I'm a bit lost as to how to respond.

Except with WTF?

I can't believe he actually said that. It shows just how out of touch with the average Australian he is. Most of our population live in the suburbs and as such a car is vital to our way of life. The difference between rich and poor is what we drive.

Why you would say such a thing in this freaking HUGE country full of vast distances and non-existent public transport in many places I don't know. It especially doesn't jell with all the hoopla about how many jobs people need to look for etc.. there are many places you cannot look for jobs if you don't have a car.

I'm sure he'd tell people to move or somesuch.. well the closer you get to excellent public transport the more expensive rents can be and the less likely you can do this if you are poor.
