Idiocy in TNG...lol

KaineMorrison

Lieutenant Commander
In Child of Light they are transporting Plasna-Plague.

Why couldn't they come to a full stop, eject the pod into space right near them, lock on a Tractor Beam and tow it to the destination?

No chance they could put these plague pods in an unmanned ship & escort that?

Or at least a smaller ship that doesn't have families.

It's that "only ship available" crap. I know, it's a plot device that makes the episode interesting, but stupid in the reality where SF has hundreds of ships.

You're talking about "The Child" and plasma plague. "Child of Light" is not the name of an episode. :)

I'd imagine that the pod would be instantly torn apart the moment they entered warp.

Did they need to go to Warp? Was the StarBase really that far?

Yeah, it was in a completely different star system according to the episode (Aucdet and Rachelis systems). Only warp can get you from system to system; the distances are just too vast for impulse speeds. Full impulse is somewhere around 1/4 light speed (supposedly). Since the average distance between stars in the Milky Way is about 5 light years, it could take them a decade or more to travel the distance needed in the episode at full impulse. :)

They could have split the ship, keep all the families from ever being in Harm's Way...

True. In fact, they even discuss transferring all "non-essential personnel to the saucer section" and separating the ship as a last resort in act four -- so it's not as if the writers didn't think of that.
