Star Trek Continues: Episode 3...

I want to echo and say that I wouldn't have never guess that Mr. Vic was in his 50s. (You see folks, that's what happens when you take care of yourself!) I still get carded every now and then for beer, and some kids at a local high school thought I was 'one of them' this past year.

Furthermore, I don't want to derail the thread further, but I have to say (to paraphrase "The Enemy Within"):

Mr. Vic isn't Kirk, William Shatner isn't Kirk, Chris Pine isn't Kirk. No one is Captain Kirk, but me. I'm Captain Kirk. IIIIII'm Captain Kiiiiirk!

(Actually, I'm a 'Commodore' but you get my meaning...lol)

Anywho, on a more serious note, I need to put "Fairest of Them All" on my list of things to watch. ;)

"Shtick" [sic]? "Simulacra" [sic]? LOL

Mignogna is a veteran, highly-paid, highly-successful actor with loads of fans.

Who are you exactly?

Oh -- that's right. A self-described "producer" (tee hee) who fancies him/herself a modern-day "Orson Welles".

What've you produced, my friend? How good are the Trek films you've made? Care to share? :guffaw:

^^^Needed to get the last word in anyway, huh?

Vic's fine doing his Kirk shtick. It's good simulacra. Nothing I've seen in him thus far has demonstrated him to be a great actor, however, on the fanfilm acting scale his performance is very high.

Oh I've spent plenty of time lurking and reading. And your response is exactly as I suspected: You have no qualifications whatsoever. And no -- writing a couple video games and "Starship Exeter" don't count. Have fun. :)

Maurice is a respected member of this board and you are new to posting here, even if you have 'lurked' for a while. Nothing is gained by coming in here and insulting posters.

Hi, Genderquire. Welcome!

Please behave far more appropriately and impressively.

Thank you.

I've caught up on the varied behind the scenes stuff on this series. EVERY fan film maker is passionate by definition. Vic's passion certainly comes across as genuine, especially after seeing him at age 9 doing exactly what he's doing now!

The odd thing for me is that of all the times I've met him, he's never come across as a Trek fan. If anything, he's been more of a Star Wars fan until recently - he cosplayed as Obi Wan at a Star Wars Celebration con, and once guested on my improv show dressed as a TIE fighter pilot. Granted I tend to see him more at anime conventions, but the Trek-ness never really showed. OTOH, at one point he was leveraging his fame as the lead voice beind a particularly popular anime dub to create a sort of pay-it-forward group of fans being nice to fans. THAT was pretty Trekkish in and of itself. :P

Still, I tend to agree that production-wise this series raises the bar, but I think this is a global trend too. It's been a while since I've seen the top-tier fan films have incongruous visuals like TOS shuttlecraft darting around like mosquitoes just for the hell of it, or have the dialogue simply ape scenes of actual episodes dropping buckets of continuity porn along the way. The community has come a LONG way, and in my view ST Continues is as much a symptom of that as it is a production pushing the boundaries of what a fan film can do.

Getting back to acting, I don't usually comment on acting in fanfilms except to say when it's exceptional, especially since most of the performers are untrained. I only mentioned Vic's Kirk because some people have been saying he's "incredible" but I personally can't get a really good sense of his chops from his portrayal of Kirk as the performance frequently feels like impersonation. I've not seen him in anything outside of fanfilms hence I can't really speak to his skills. Just to be clear. :)

I think it's relative, really. I get what you're saying, and I agree, it's just that when you're used to fan level acting (no offense to anyone intended), when you see someone with some credible skill, it makes you sit up and take notice, and that's what it is with Vic. I've never seen him in action outside of STC, so I don't know how much range he has, but for me, his Kirk is very well done. Just my two bits, of course. ;)

I agree with both points: On one hand, 'Kirk' should be portrayed - I feel - based on what we know the traits should be
and not a impersonation.....which Maurice feels Mr. Vic sometimes does in his performance. (I actually felt that James Cawley was a heavy Shatner impersonator, which takes away from his performance. Hence the reason I prefer the 'new guy' in Phase II).

On the other hand, not being familiar with his work outside the Trek fan projects- like J. Allen - I felt that Mr. Vic did a good job in his 'interpretation' especially in this episode. (I did, however, think that he was going to hit the helmswoman at one point....which would have added to the 'hate' we would have felt for Mirror-Kirk).

We're accustomed to seeing Actors 'doing their thing'. With these fan films, I tend to watch them in "dramatization mode", much like those Unsolved Mysteries crime reenactments. They'd take someone physically resembling the suspect/focus of the story, and play out the physical events of the day in question. He's seen, say, getting into an argument with his boss, then driving home from work, stopping at a tavern for a beer, leaving for home, seeing a strange vehicle parked in front of his house, and so on, and so on (I'll stop there before everyone gets into the story  ). My point is, while these can be very dramatic and interesting, no one watching them is thinking "He really captured the essence of a man feeling trapped by events beyond his control.". They're basically point-by-point replay of events. Mostly, you might thing "Wow, the actor actually looks a lot like the suspect."

While not exactly the same type of thing, I watch these fan films from a similar frame of expectation, as 'reenactments' of a sort. It's just a different kind of performance than we're generally accustomed to.

I hope that made some sense.

I was leery going into this one, but I finally sat down and watched it this morning.

Beyond some of the dialogue coming off as awkward, I thought it was pretty damn impressive.

Just saw it for the first time. (Been super busy with work)

My thoughts...

THAT WAS INCREDIBLE!

I feel so lucky to be able to watch this show. It may come only once every few months, but it's gold every time. I feel like I'm watching the original series all over. If they ever have another kickstarter, I'm definitely throwing some cash their way.

I wasn't crazy about Todd Haberkorn at first (first couple episodes), but he completely sold me with this episode. He was as perfect as a non-Nimoy could be.

The new Mccoy seemed great at first glance as well.

Vic was pitch perfect as always.

There's so much to say about this episode, but it speaks for itself. This series just gets better and better. I am so impressed.
