2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil

OMG, the front pages on the Swiss newspapers were so arrogant this morning (like in a reverse universe)

Congrats to Costa Rica! A very well played game by them. Nice to see another CONCACAF team doing well. :techman:

I'm with you on this. I'm pulling for the other CONCACAF teams. Costa Rica has been a decent side for a while. It always feels like they're third in the region and they were bound to surprise in a tournament at some point.

Yay for Costa Rica. Great to see a small nation beat the odds. I have nothing in particular against Italy but after the 2006 fiasco I don't have any issues with them losing, either.

On the whole France looked pretty impressive and good for Ecuador.

The English media are providing the standard hysterical (over)reactions as their side's departure from the event is confirmed. What an ugly group of people they can be.

Argentina looks really ineffective against Iran to me (which btw easily seems like the weakest team I've seen so far at the WC).

I mean, they might score 4 goals in the second half and make me look like an idiot. But I'm not impressed. Especially since the Messis, DiMarias, etc. should be used to playing against very defense-oriented teams.

I'm not impressed too but I'd rather have them winning, it's tactical, for after the group stage.

Just another day for ITV:

ITV’s Clive Tyldesley just made a very weird commentating gaffe during coverage of the Argentina-Iran game.

Explaining why Iranian players have short names on their shirts, he said that they wear their “Christian” names on the shirts .

Well, that's embarassing in this context, but "christian name" is just a synonym for "first name" in British English AFAIK.

"Given name" is probably the best word to use since it includes cultures that have surname first as well. It's an awkward gaff, but he just meant given name and didn't mean anything bad by it.

Of course it is. But you gotta admit it might've been better to use a different term. :p

And of course he didn't mean anything bad by it. I just thought it's mildly amusing, Jesus!

I mean... uhh... generic_prophet.

And Götze scores with the worst header ever. He's so lucky he managed to hit his own knee with it.

Boring, boring Germany in this game.
