2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil

Aw, and that's a heart breaking ending. For much of this game (from the very beginning) I would have been happy with a tie. But to end like that... :(

Don't take it too bad. You only need a tie against Germany to advance to the next round.

The bad news (for both of us) - I don't think Germany is a team that can play for ties. ;)

Yeah, I'm calculating the scenarios where we lose to Germany and advance. I think Germany can advance with a tie as well, I'm just not counting on a US tie with Germany since Germany has to make up for last game.

Not after Gijon '82...

Obviously, I'm talking about the current team. It's rather offense-orientated and whenever it tries to play in a more defensive way, things go bad. Playing for a tie right from the start also goes against Löw's philosophy of the game (and Klinsmann's as well). Of course, the game on Thursday might reach a point where both teams settle for a tie.

Though Germany won Gijon '82. Which is the most embarrassing thing about it from the Austrian point of view: the deal was to lose. To GERMANY. Germany needed to win the game to move on, Austria needed to not lose by more than two goals. So the deal was to let Germany win by one or two goals.

And then we were promptly eliminated by France. (Was it worth it? :p )

Today was a super-awkward day to be watching football on Austrian national TV. Their expert commentator happens to have been one of the match riggers back in the day, so the topic of Algeria's WC track record was .. uh .. uncomfortable.

Well, crap. Only 30-odd seconds and the ego would have been punctured. Figures that it was him who dropped the cross straight onto a team mate's head, though. Moral victory to the US but they, of course, are useless victories in this context.

I'm almost tempted to wake up at 2am and see us against Spain. Spain are making all the right noises but I'm hoping they don't live up to them. We deserve to leave this tournament with something.

^The Sun, Mirror, Mail and maybe the Express (although they're just obsessed with the royals) are the main culprits. Everything in there is so dumbed down. We got a 'complimentary' edition of The Sun free in the post when the world cup started... only it wasn't about the world cup, it was about the England team, England and the St. Georges flag generally. We needed paper to start the fire for roasting marshmallows so...

Although I obviously wanted England to do well I could help finding it a little hilarious when Costa Rica beat Italy. I want Costa Rica to win the whole thing now, long shot I know, but wouldn't it be great? ;)

Well as a Derby County fan I’ve long had an affinity with Costa Rico, especially given Paulo Wanchope is their assistant manager currently, so I hope they will the thing now (however unlikely that is) although obviously not until England beat them in the last group game ;)

I think some of the media commentary has been quite balanced about England (or maybe I read the right papers) and I still think it’s hardly a disaster to narrowly lose to two teams (and in fact just one player in the latter case) that, lest we forget, are both supposedly better than England given the FIFA rankings--although both have now been beaten by a team 20 or so places below them. It’s been that kind of WC so far. Spain have been woeful, either Italy or Uruguay will be going home the same time England do, Brazil have looked poor but still picked up points, and it took Argentina practically the whole game to beat Iran.

Yeah I’m still disappointed, but I was more disappointed after South Africa even though we got further.

If I had to put money on a team now it’d be France or Holland, but that said as poorly as Brazil and Argentina are doing, home(ish) advantage may yet prove the deciding factor.

^Indeed. ;)

Oh yes, the media that has even an ounce of class seems to be taking it well, I thought Redknapp's thoughts on it were pretty interesting. I agree to an extent, two 2-1s aren't bad at all, they're obviously just both not quite enough. However neither Italy or Uruguay were at their best- as you say, they were beaten by Costa Rica- Uruguay by two goals, so England should've really taken advantage of that.

Yeah I would say France or The Netherlands were looking pretty strong but anything could happen, there's still a long way to go. The African teams aren't doing too badly either, it'd be good to see one of them do well.

We deserve to leave this tournament with something.
I now amend that remark to the following: Our earlier performances meant we deserved to leave this tournament with something. That effort against Spain got what it deserved. We were okay for about 25 minutes and then Spain did pretty much what they liked. We don't have the resources to rest our "better" players and it well and truly showed.

Oh, well. We still did better than most (and certainly I) expected and maybe a handful of kids will be inspired to choose football over the many other sporting options available in this country. Sadly, most will choose the soft options of rugby league (minimal global competition) and AFL (zero global competition / relevance), which pay ludicrous sums of money to teenagers and don't really require those kids to leave their comfort zones.

Good to see Brazil put together a better performance, but even by their standards the defence is laughable. Really, the phrase "Brazil(ian) defence" should be next to the word oxymoron in the dictionary. Better sides will exploit it and they don't have their usual attacking resources to take their usual option of "score more than the opposition". I'd still like to see them win it, though.

Things did look potentially interesting last night for the possibility of Mexico finishing top and Brazil having to play Holland in the next round!

It will be interesting to see Brazil when they have to play a top side.

It's already going to be interesting against Chile. If they manage to stop Neymar, it's over for Brasil, they don't have an impressive team behind him

We're already getting two top games with 2 teams having to leave that probably deserve to reach the quarter finals. On the other hand teams from other groups will have it a lot easier in their first knock-out round games. Kind of an unbalanced draw, methinks.

Tonight, either Italy or Uruguay will leave the tournament. Hopefully, it'll be an exciting game. Unfortunately, I'm going to miss it. :(

That sounds awesomely awkward indeed

I'm starting to feel the crushing sense of dread I always experience before a match of Italy. I shouldn't care for it, but I do.

I sympathise. I'm feeling a similar sense of dread and Germany will "only" be facing the USA. Uruguay is a strong team.
