Capaldi can't be The Doctor???

The only thing I will say about Capaldi is that I don't quite get why he is allowed to use his natural Scottish accent, while David Tennant I believe was asked not to use his. Also just for continuity I guess. But then again I don't care much about continuity when it comes to this show.

Has Capaldi done much work using non-Scottish accents? For that matter, has Eccleston done much work using non-Manchester accents? (The only ones I recall are when Eccleston played Scottish in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and when he used a more posh English accent while disguising himself as a friendly doctor in The Seeker.) David Tennant seemed able to slip into his Estuary English accent pretty easily, so maybe that's part of it.

Also, since Eccleston & Capaldi were more famous at the time than Tennant, might that have something to do with it? Perhaps they had the clout to insist on their native accents while Tennant didn't?

BTW, how would you define Matt Smith's accent?

Regarding the Scottish thing, don't forget Sylvestor McCoy.

I don't really get Scottish from McCoy. It's definately not your typical RP but it doesn't sound Scottish either. McCoy's accent seems like a thing unto itself. It's like English but with randomly rolled "r"s and other strong emphases that seem to come out of nowhere. I suppose there's a bit of a Scottish lilt at times but doesn't really sound the way that Scottish accents typically do in my head (i.e. Jamie McCrimmon or Craig Ferguson or Malcolm Tucker).

He's probably the least popular doctor of the classic series save for Colin Baker, heck maybe even out of all of Doctor Who. There are a lot of fans of Hartnel, but there are a lot of people (especially younger viewers) who really don't like Hartnel with me included (although I love Colin Baker but that's another story).

Whoa, hold on there one second. You're a little too eager to speak for the Doctor Who fanbase in general.

While I'm quite fond of Hartnell, I think he is right. In most favorite Doctor polls, Hartnell & C. Baker usually end up in the bottom 3 alongside McGann (who is probably only there because his screen run was so short).

Wouldn't the real problem for Capaldi be, that, if Scotland votes for independence in two month, he would not be an UK citizen any longer - and a foreigner can't play The Doctor? ;)

Have I mentioned lately that the Doctor was created by a Canadian? And his debut serial was directed by an Indian immigrant, and the theme song was written by an Australian?

Besides, Superman, the archetypal American superhero, is currently being played by a British actor. So it balances out.

As I recall from The Story of English on PBS way back when, there are two distinct types of Scottish accent, highland and lowland. McCoy is a native of Dunoon in the Highlands. Craig Ferguson and Peter Capaldi are from Glasgow in the Lowlands. Jamie was supposedly a Highlander, but as I said, Frazer Hines is from Yorkshire and he faked his Scottish accent.

Adding that on top of Christian Bale, our British ex-Batman and Andrew Garfield, our current British Spider-Man. "He's British!? America is suffering record unemployment and we outsourced Spider-Man!"

Amy's accent is a strange considering that she was born and grew up in Leadsworth and nieter of her parents seem to have the same accent. As for Capaldi, he's a fine actor and should make a great Doctor.

Amy wasn't born in Leadworth. Her parents moved her there when she was young, and retaining her accent was an act of rebellion, it was part of her character.

And to add on to that

Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy as Porfessor X.

But it makes a change for the Brit to be cast in the hero role. ;)

Also worth noting David Tennant did some voice work for the licensed audio dramas by Big Finish before being cast as the Doctor.

Not sure what you mean by Jean Simmons-I think you mean Jean Marsh.

Yep, meant Jean Marsh, but I'm not gonna change the original post as cause too much confusion! :)

Interestingly enough, I play the Doctor Who RPG Adventures in Time and Space, and one of their supplements (The Time Traveller's Companion), mentions Commander Maxill as being rather pissed that The Doctor pinched his face! Not without precedent, as Romana II deliberately copied someone, so it is possible that The Doctor may subconsciously take on the appearance of someone he's met before in his travels. Could this even explain The Enemy of the World?

I do get the impression that I'm going to enjoy Capaldi's run, whatever accent he uses.

Music to my ears, but then I love ladies with Scottish accents, and if they happen to be red heads and gorgeous into the bargain its a perfect storm.

Ps. Mel's all right...

pps. I'm joking...

I don't really mind Mel now in retrospect.

She has done some decent audios.

^ I haven't heard the audios but I have rewatched the early McCoy era and I too found her not as annoying then as I remembered.

I don't think I've heard her in more than one or two Audios, but, The Valleyard Doctor Who Unbound Audio He Jests at Scars really raised her up out of my hatred (I really despised her screeching for a lot of years)

I suppose given that Eleven hallucinated Amy in the last few minutes of his life, it could also explain Capaldi's accent.

So, was the Sixth Doctor thinking about someone Scottish before he bumped his head on the TARDIS console?
No, but on the other hand, seeing as the scheming, conniving Rani was the first face that the Seventh saw, it could explain his own mischievous behavior and later on, his own conspiring personality. :)

I remember reading a theory that Seven actually arranged Six's death to secure his own creation! Too much wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey for me!

I think that was a storyline for the books. I don't mind it myself, but admittedly I haven't read much New Adventures to actually judge.

Even so, its a better explanation that bumping his head on the console or whatever. I still want Big Finish to do an actual regeneration story for Old Sixie!

They kinda, somewhat did that with Romana's Destiny of The Daleks Regeneration in the Gallifrey Adventures Audio Series (though not that straight forward)
