Capaldi can't be The Doctor???

Estuary English? I believe the correct technical term for Tennant's accent is "mockney wanker". God, he's irritating. The voice, the mugging faces, the verbal tics and catchphrases.

Howwwwwwwwwwwww?

Unless you're not a heterosexual woman. Then I get it.

But howwwww? He is BEAUTIFUL.  :adore: :luvlove:

Well, I'm not, so that would explain it, probably. However, I have it on good authority of a heterosexual woman of my acquaintance that David Tennant is not unattractive, but is also a lanky streak who needs to eat something, and is no George Clooney.

Here we are, knew I didn't imagine it:

Tenth Doctor speaks with an Estuary English accent, rather than the Greater Manchester accent (Christopher Eccleston's own accent) that the Ninth Doctor used, the Received Pronunciation of most earlier Doctors, or Tennant's natural Scottish English. David Tennant told SFX magazine in 2006 that Russell T Davies had asked him to drop his natural Scottish accent, because he felt "we'd like to not go for another obvious regional accent, because I suppose they'd done that".[18] In a 23 December interview on BBC Radio 1, Tennant explained that a line had been scripted for the Christmas special explaining that the newly regenerated Doctor had imprinted on Rose Tyler's accent, "like a chick hatching from an egg", but the line was cut from the final episode.

But it was another obvious regional accent. If you're not from that region.

Which I said in my first post. I'm merely giving their reasons, not saying I agree with them.

That has disturbing connotations for past Doctors, although I guess Five could have gotten his accent from Nyssa rather than Tegan...and it's not like an American accent would have made Colin any worse ;)

Contrast with Patrick Troughton who was 46 when he started. He was already renowned for having an old looking face, but his level of health and energy was far beyond Hartnell's.

Not sure about that. Troughton died relatively young of a heart attack. Debbie Watling also said that Troughton had a very serious heart issue during the filming of some of his DW episodes. Also that he was fairly self-conscious.

Troughton did seem to have a real spark of humor though, a twinkle in the eyes. Definitely great fun to watch!

I don't think Capaldi's age is going to be a barrier at all to accepting him as the Doctor.

Agree with this whole heartedly!!

Jeepers, once someone gets down to judging someone by their accent, it's only a stones through from judging by other meaningless characteristics. I strongly disapprove. :(

3) He doesn't look the part and has a dreadful accent.

 What's wrong with his accent?

 What's wrong with his accent?

It's Scottish.

Huh???? So were Jamie's, Amy's, and the Seventh Doctor's. Scottish accents are awesome. (At least, real ones are.)
Amy's accent was dreadful, the worst one I've ever heard. Jamie's wasn't that strong and it was smoother than Amy's which was a harsh accent which really grates on you. McCoy's was so faint I couldn't actually hear it until someone pointed out he was using one.

So am I, what's wrong with having a Scottish accent?
Some Scottish accents are so harsh. Some are okay but some such as Amy's are dreadful.

I have nothing against amy's accent. It was Amy herself I couldn't stand...

Amy's accent is awful, but I too hate her character as well.

Amy's accent is a strange considering that she was born and grew up in Leadsworth and nieter of her parents seem to have the same accent. As for Capaldi, he's a fine actor and should make a great Doctor.

Wouldn't the real problem for Capaldi be, that, if Scotland votes for independence in two month, he would not be an UK citizen any longer - and a foreigner can't play The Doctor? ;)

I always find it odd when people post threads (and make comments) like this. Why do the work of the negative nellies for them? Let them post that crap, why propogate it?

As he's living in England (or probably Wales now) he won't get a vote in the referendum. Then he'd be able to have two passports, Scots and UK, if he wanted. And independence won't actually happen til March 2016 if it does happen, so two full seasons before then!
