The only thing I will say about Capaldi is that I don't quite get why he is allowed to use his natural Scottish accent, while David Tennant I believe was asked not to use his. Also just for continuity I guess. But then again I don't care much about continuity when it comes to this show.![]()
Has Capaldi done much work using non-Scottish accents? For that matter, has Eccleston done much work using non-Manchester accents? (The only ones I recall are when Eccleston played Scottish in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and when he used a more posh English accent while disguising himself as a friendly doctor in The Seeker.) David Tennant seemed able to slip into his Estuary English accent pretty easily, so maybe that's part of it.
Also, since Eccleston & Capaldi were more famous at the time than Tennant, might that have something to do with it? Perhaps they had the clout to insist on their native accents while Tennant didn't?
BTW, how would you define Matt Smith's accent?
Regarding the Scottish thing, don't forget Sylvestor McCoy.
I don't really get Scottish from McCoy. It's definately not your typical RP but it doesn't sound Scottish either. McCoy's accent seems like a thing unto itself. It's like English but with randomly rolled "r"s and other strong emphases that seem to come out of nowhere. I suppose there's a bit of a Scottish lilt at times but doesn't really sound the way that Scottish accents typically do in my head (i.e. Jamie McCrimmon or Craig Ferguson or Malcolm Tucker).
He's probably the least popular doctor of the classic series save for Colin Baker, heck maybe even out of all of Doctor Who. There are a lot of fans of Hartnel, but there are a lot of people (especially younger viewers) who really don't like Hartnel with me included (although I love Colin Baker but that's another story).
Whoa, hold on there one second. You're a little too eager to speak for the Doctor Who fanbase in general.
While I'm quite fond of Hartnell, I think he is right. In most favorite Doctor polls, Hartnell & C. Baker usually end up in the bottom 3 alongside McGann (who is probably only there because his screen run was so short).
