Star Trek Continues: Episode 3...

Oh I'm certainly going to do it, but it's a different exercise and requires a different approach. Being uncomfortable isn't really a problem since I think we're better off if we step outside our comfort zone occasionally and try new things.

What was up with the strange wiggling shuttle pod doors near the end?

It was mentioned earlier in the thread but the reason why is because that is the way it works (on the original shuttlecraft which was used for filming). The same wiggling doors can be seen in TOS; most notably in "Metamorphosis"

Do you happen to know what portion of the episode this can be seen in? How far into the episode? I want to see if I can find it.

Probably near the beginning after they've landed on the planetoid shortly after the opening credits.

I understand why the original Galileo was used, and that the doors operate that way, but for that close shot it couldn't have been much more trouble to build doors elsewhere that would close smoothly. Just sayin'. :)

Of all the things to gripe about, that's what bugged you?
I didn't find anything to gripe about. I noticed the doors and commented on it. You asked if I was serious, and I offered an alternative to using the actual shuttle doors. If I was in a meeting at work and saw a different way to do something I'd speak up there, too. It doesn't mean I'm complaining, just offering another way to do something.

I'm not one of those people who picks everything apart until all that's left is the bones scattered on the floor. I'll leave that to the "critics."

I think I've made it very clear in this thread that I'm quite satisfied with what STC is doing and look forward to the next episode.

Well, it was trouble because it was 10:00 PM on a Sunday night when we realized the door issue; in a city that we were visiting for one day. Yes, if time wasn't an issue we could have done something else and honestly we did a ton of takes on that scene trying to get a get good take and a good door closeure. Honestly I kind of like it since it is what I remember seeing as a kid on TOS. Keep in mind that everyone lives someplace else so it was not practical from a financial or logistical standpoint to worry about it. It literally would have cost thousands of dollars more to rectify (retain the crew, actors, etc) for something that matched the original and in fact WAS an original. That was the scenario. I hope that clarifies. Sometimes something that on the surface seems so simple in fact is not.

I don't have a problem with the way it turned out, just throwing it out there.

I literally giggled and clapped my hands when the doors wiggled shut. I love that they didn't try to change it.

Ah. Well, thank you for the clarification.

Nor am I. Nor are most critical opinions. It's important to remember that.

As am I.

Loved it
Hope they do another original story for the next voyage but Todd and Vic really shined as did Chris. Sorry I know many who have fully embraced JJ trek have fully embraced the notion of different interpretations of Kirk, Spock , Scotty ect. But if it's possible to do Kirk and Spock as if young nimoy and shatner stepping back into the role then I am one happy camper
Awesome stuff
Doug's E is flawless

Definitely!

Todd really impressed me as Spock this episode!

Agreed. There is something..."thoughtful" about his enunciation that I can't really explain. I would imagine that playing Spock might lead one to playing it cool and stiff, but there's something shaping up here with Mr. Haberkorn's portrayal that is effective, as if the character is thinking about the words he uses, not just "coldly" speaking is lines. I, too, hope this continues, and is not just a characteristic of Spock's mirror self.

Mr. Mignogna does something very interesting: he walks right up to a Shatner impersonation, then backs right off and lets his interpretation speak for itself. He does it constantly. He gets you thinking Shatner just long enough to draw you into the right frame of mind, then pulls back. I don't know if it's an intentional technique or not, but getting the viewer to participate in carrying the load that way is fascinating! It makes me think of The Enemy Within, but in the sense that instead of Kirk split in two beings, Shatner and Kirk are split in two...with Mignogna as the Kirk half! I hope that makes sense!

I don't trust Hollywood to get anything right anymore, so I'm really thrilled about this. These episodes are truly a unique Work of Art.

I wonder if they're going to need another Kickstarter to replace the scenery that Vic chewed up? j/k ;)

More seriously, I agree that Todd's portrayal of Spock really showed some serious improvement. He really seemed to be wrestling with himself and weighing the consequences of his actions.

As far as Vic's Mirror Kirk, I admire the fact that he was able to get close to the line of going over the top without actually doing it. The role could have been a caricature, but he gave us moments of pure villainy while also showing glimpses of something more. Mirror Kirk lied, cheated, backstabbed and connived his way to the Captain's Chair (and woman) but he still was a formidable and dangerous opponent.
