Star Trek Continues: Episode 3...

Well it may not be a place full of infighting or petty drama, but there's no denying that it's very much a selectively closed group. Alec himself set it up that way when that first thread started two years ago. The cognitive dissonance between his grand language about uniting all the fan film production teams to work together (but only the ones he liked) was just too embarassing to process.

I'm happy to be proven wrong that the group is functioning but don't make it out to be some welcoming haven for all when it isn't.

If it works for you guys, great! Always happy to watch a new fan film and offer my thoughts. But I also trust the opinions of the people I know in that group and I've heard both sides of the story.

One does have to identify oneself. One must have something to do with fan film production or distribution. In other words, everyone has 'skin' in the game. (STR does help distribution) Most, "infighting and petty drama" is instigated by people who do not meet those criteria. Your unidentified source may be just trying to make your unidentified self feel good about your own unending sniping.

While I'm looking forward to Episode 3 I hope the series gets back to going forward. Please, no more revisits.

Only a few weeks to go until Episode 3. Can't wait! And for those who might not be aware it's a Mirror universe story.

On another note things I definitely have no wish to see on any future STC episode:
- We've had Michael Forest (and it worked), but please no more veteran TOS actors reprising their roles especially the main cast playing older versions of themselves in some stupid time travel gimmick episode. Phase II has done it and it just undermines the whole suspension of disbelief.
- Keep any connections to other productions vague and indirect. Please, no overt continuity porn. On this point I'm crossing my fingers in regard to the upcoming Mirror Universe episode.
- The idea has been put forth but I, for one, do not want to see any crossovers. Keep it TOS.
- If they do Klingons or Andorians then please let them be the TOS variety and not the TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT era variety.

That kind of story I can get behind. But revisting places and/or characters we saw plenty enough of before is not a good idea, in my opinion, and certainly is not in the spirot of the original series which these productions are supposedly trying to perpetuate.

In fairness STC is two for two so far in my opinion. Based on that Episode 3 should be decent.

What concerns me is the apparent tendency (by fan productions) to revisit what was done before rather than forging something new in true spirit of the original series. Revisiting the Mirror Universe is something the spinoff series did. It's not something TOS likely would have done. They got away with revisiting Apollo because it was a story of redemption. "Lolani" was a fleshing out of a kernel of an idea. But what is the real point of returning to the MU of the TOS era? That's what we're waiting to see.

So far I give STC full marks for execution and creativity and engaging me (and many others) with their production. It's actually for that very reason that I'm wary--because I'm interested and give a damn. If I wasn't at all interested then I wouldn't be talking about it.

It's my hope that after Episode 3, regardless of how entertaining it may be, that Star Trek Continues gets back to the kind of thinking that spawned a story like "Lolani" and refrains from revisiting the familiar. Let Phase II and others do the fanfic and continuity porn and strive to keep STC feeling like a more genuine continuation of TOS.

I for one, don't mind little revisits, as long as they aren't too blatant and don't get out of hand. Of course, inserting continuity gratuitously is always a bad idea, but when it works, it works.

By going back to TOS' second season to do a direct sequel to "Mirror, Mirror" they are digging deeper into retconning. Dr. McKennah was said to be new to the ship in the fourth year of the Enterprise's 5-year mission. She certainly wasn't there in TOS' second season. Maybe they'll say in the Mirror Universe she was already aboard the mirror Enterprise only we didn't see her. Even so it's a stretch to envision basically a ship of pirates having a Counselor aboard. Unless, of course, she's something else.

In somewhat related news, a new Star Trek comic book was recently published by IDW and popular artist John Byrne. It uses a lot of photoshopped TOS -era stills, akin to those old 70s photonovels, but it's a new story AND a direct sequel to...you guessed it, MIRROR MIRROR.

It's not WATCHMEN by any means, just alright. It'll be interesting to see if anything parallels...
