They're actually working on 'Pacific Rim 2'

Still need to see the first one. It's funny, because amongst my friends, those who have seen it have very different opinions. Ranging from highly entertaining, to dull and stupid, to 'I turned it off after an hour'.

Which makes me extremely interested. So I should probably watch it sometime soon.

Meh. If the leads return... more meh. I found the drivers of the big robots to be some of the most boring characters in film history. Not engaged with them at all.

Charlie Day and Ron Perlman.... if the movie was about them? In.

But, overall, the first movie was boring for something about giant robots fighting giant monsters.

I wasn't a crazy big fan of the first movie, but it was entertaining enough, and I'd be up for seeing a sequel.

I just hope they vary up some of the battles and creatures this time. And leave out the bickering scientists.

They need new leads with weapons besides just swords as the ultimate kill.
I found the film to be very MEH actor/story wise. The graphics and action were good but since I didn't care about the pilots it wasn't like I was rooting for anything.

Poorest romance on screen I've seen in awhile.

I saw it at the cinema so turning it off after an hour wasn't an option.

I can, however, confirm that it was both extremely stupid and somewhat entertaining...

It was great mindless fun and wonderful eye candy. I'm up for another go round. I'll be more enthused if they actually get a production deal though.

Del Toro is writing a Pacific Rim 2 story? Shouldn't he write a story for the first movie first?

Uh what romance?

The only romantic couple in the movie are the russian pilots who are married in which case i agree they needed a lot more screen time and development. Otherwise not sure what your refering to.

I liked Pacific Rim a lot, I'm glad its getting a sequel. Even though I liked the first one, I do agree that the next one could use some new main characters, although I don't see that happening.

My opinion exactly about Pacific Rim: it needed more Ron Perlman, and less everyone else.

Anyway, even ignoring my own opinion of Pacific Rim (which isn't very high) I didn't think the movie did well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel?

It made over 400 million worldwide, apparently. It was only a "flop" on the "domestic" market.

I don't know how much longer the "domestic box office" is even going to last as a meaningful category.

Yup. It was a well-made entry in a particular genre that's not meant to be taken seriously. Of course, some kaiju films can be serious and allegorical, and that's the angle Godzilla took (although it ultimately wasn't as deep as it tried to look), but Pacific Rim went in the other direction and did it well. So Legendary Pictures pretty much has both flavors of kaiju movie covered.

Although I admit, there is a part of me that would love to see Pacific Rim vs. Godzilla.

I absolutely love this scene and that final line..

Everything else about Pacific Rim was filler

But it was pretty filler.
