Mr. Scott in Valley of the Shadow

If you have seen the episode Valley of the Shadow James Doohan plays a father of a little girl. There is another Trek actor also in this episode. But what puzzles me is how James Doohan disguises his voice and sounds very different from Mr. Scott. Was that his natural voice or is the voice in Trek his natural voice? Thanks..

Well ... we know Doohan's Scotty was made up, but we haven't established whether his voice in Valley of the Shadow was his natural voice or not. Doohan was a reasonably talented voice actor who provided a lot of different voices in cartoon series (including Star Trek), and also dubbed the Klingon captain in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. So he might have been doing something funny with his voice in Valley of the Shadow, too. You need to catch a recording of one of his interviews to make sure.

Here's one from the 1970s that should give you a good comparison.

Doohan accidentally forgets to use the "Scotty" accent in "The Doomsday Machine" - the "thirty seconds later - poof!" line.

A classic episode. Watch it and see the actor and hear him. He does not sound like Mr. Scott. There is another trek actor in this episode. Can anyone guess? HINT he was in a Trek 1st season episode.

David Opatoshu: Anan 7. What do I win?

There is also an episode of THE INVADERS (coincidentally my current avatar) coincidentally titled "Valley of the Shadow", featuring TOS guest stars Harry Townes and Jon Lormer.

I understand the Scottish accent for Montgomery Scott was based on a Gunnery Sergeant or somesuch that Doohan worked alongside during the war. Evidently at first, no one could understand the Scot but, eventually, Doohan could mimic it perfectly and that's the voice he used for Scotty.

I saw "Valley of the Shadow" when it originally aired, and either became aware of Opatoshu because of that episode, or already knew of him from something else I'd seen him in. He had a pretty distinctive look back then, since he often wore that little beard. I think he also used to show up on talk shows, perhaps the Tonight Show.

Makes one wonder, what if Scotty sounded like this?

Doohan did say when developing the voice, he had to tone down the accent to be comprehensible to American ears.
