Just got caught up with the collections of this series. After Darkness was horrible. Bad art, a pretty odd storyline that didn't make a lick of sense, really. (Somehow the Vulcans missed that an essential reproductive practice was thrown off? Come on...) Khitomer Conflict was actually pretty good, if perhaps possessing too many moving parts that didn't all come together. (Sulu's sister could have been planted earlier in the series. Perhaps in place of that worthless Gorn issue?)

I think 4-parters would better suit the series. The two-parters were too pared down to be very good. Khitomer Conflict had a nice balance of plot and character beats.

I concur. Greater issue length would be a major improvement to this series.

It looks to me they'll be visiting the Prime Universe? This looks to be very fun - I wonder if Q introduces them to characters from all of the series?

Also 'what has become of the space station once known as Deep Space Nine... and the man called Benjamin Sisko?' is this post 'What You Leave Behind'?

Either way this should be a lot of fun!

No, what they're visiting is the late 24th century of their universe. DS9 (a Bajoran-made station) and Benjamin Sisko are far enough removed from the Kelvin branching off that they won't look that different from their Prime selves. How the latter might act is a different story.

And all bets are off as far as to the appearance of the Abramsverse versions of the Defiant and the Enterprise D/E...

Actually it sounds like they are visiting the JJverse's version of the 24th century.

Well, the description specifically says, "Kirk and the Enterprise crew are thrust into the future of their new timeline." That implies it's meant to be the Abramsverse 24th century -- unless "new timeline" is from the characters' perspective rather than ours.

If this is indeed the 24th century of the Abramsverse, then I'm surprised that Roberto Orci and his film crew have let the comics go this far.

Well, it's very unlikely that this is going to cover material that future movie(s) will be doing, so it's relatively safe. And it's not like the movies would be beholden to the comics even if they do go that far.

Hell it's not like TNG was beholden to the version of the future Q showed Picard in All Good Things, since one of the last things Generations did was take out the Enterprise-D and All Good Things was canon.

Absolutely, I guess the stuff in the comics is stuff you WON'T see onscreen.

Many of you are hypothesizing this is Abramsverse DS9; even if this is so then still this comic looks very fanw**ky!! I still bet in this 6parter TNG/VOY characters will also be revisited.

Also it has been specified that the Q here IS the same one we saw on TV visiting a new universe.

Not really that surprising. If anything, it implies to me anyway that the rumours are true and the Abramsverse is only planned as a trilogy of movies.

Or at the very least, we know that Trek XIII will have nothing to do with the 24th century, DS9 or Captain Sisko.

What is surprising about this is that supposedly IDW doesn't have the license to DS9 (they allowed it to expire after poor sales of their DS9 series a few years back). And while they have gotten around their licensing problems in the past in regards to using particular characters from shows they don't have a license to (like Voyager characters showing up in various TNG series) this sounds like a very serious involvement from a show they don't have a license to.

Yes, that was made quite clear when the plot details for part 1. In fact according to this article:

It just occurred to me that the part in the blurb about the Enterprise visiting a "new universe" and about Sisko must mean that Q is sending the Abramsverse Enterprise to the 24th century prime reality. So then does this mean that they'll directly link Countdown/Star Trek Online in this portrayal of the Star Trek multiverse? And will "The Q Gambit Part 2" be before or after 2387?

And another thought: I like the novels better than the comics but what if we're going to get an actual visual depiction of Ro aboard DS9?

If it is the future of the Abramsverse, I suspect that it's Q's doing that such a version of Sisko even exists in the first place.

Given the 'butterfly effect' wrought by the changes to the timeline, the likelihood that any characters from TNG, DS9 and Voyager (even Tuvok wasn't yet born when the timelines diverged) would ever exist in Abramsverse versions would seem to be rather low.

Not quite. The blurb says " In Star Trek #36, Kirk and the Enterprise crew are thrust into the future of their new timeline" which presumably refers to the Abramsverse. And the part which mentions Sisko "But in this alternate reality, what has become of the space station once known as Deep Space Nine... and the man called Benjamin Sisko?" would reinforce that it is set in the Abramsverse. After all, there's no way the Enterprise crew would know about DS9 or Sisko to care about looking him up in the Prime universe, which means this comic is presenting an Abramsverse DS9.

As we've seen in every alternate Trek history, the laws of magical comic book universes mean everyone's alternate will not only be alive, but be in a position analogous to their Prime counterparts. We even have freakishly similar events occurring across the multiverse - Kirk and Spock in the warp core or Tuvok and Kes or Seven in Voyager's Jeffries Tube would have to be drops in the bucket to justify the kind of stuff we've seen in the Mirror Universe and elsewhere.
