I like STID. Is that wrong?

Not sure why this movie is talked about as a mediocre effort. I liked it. A lot.

For context, I have been a fan since the mid-80s. I have always liked ST, but recognize that some efforts are less the exemplary. My favorite series is TNG; my favorite movie TWOK. I liked ST09.

I thought this movie was well-written with great respect for prior incarnations and the established universe. It had great visuals, great acting, and with some relevance.

I liked seeing Khan in action during his prime, especially after being 'awake' for a while, which we really didn't get to see on Space Seed.

I also liked watching Kirk stumble, fall, and learn…

Anyway, I hope I am not the only one.

Maybe. But the reason I asked here, is because I see a lot people in this board complaining.

I've come to actually prefer STID to the 2009 reboot movie, in most ways. I think it benefits from being able to just hit the ground running and tell a story, not needing to waste time explaining how the band got put together.

The merits (or otherwise) of that story are debatable in places, yes. But in every other important respect I think I prefer it to ST2009.

 

So if there are people present who didn't like it, you believe nobody likes it? Why would you believe that? If you seen those conversations you have to know there are a ton of people here who love STID.

You're not the only one; MILLIONS of people across the planet loved the movie (and the previous one), myself included. Who hates both movies? IMHO, people who treat Star Trek as a religion and think that Abrams, Orci, and Kurtzman somehow violated sacred tenets and are apostates who've violated the purity of it, as I've said before.

All that, you I' and other who like the movies can do is just keep on liking them and pay the people who don't no mind, they're in the minority, and the wrong side of things, and they know it.

Overall, I like the reboot. As I've said before, I like Star Trek movies, and this is one.

But if I were to back up a bit and make changes, I think I'd add in a few of the cut scenes, and maybe take out some that made the cut. Going back farther, I might rewrite some of the personal interaction, and take out the Spock/Uhura romance stuff. It just isn't relevant to the story and isn't really much more than filler.

Really, if it came down to having this series of Trek movies or not having them, I'd choose to have them the way they are.

I hope I live long enough to see the next reboot, and I hope that the next director will learn from these last two.

No, it's not wrong to like STID.

It's wrong to like NEM.

 

We all like different things, there are some parts of Into Darkness that I like others that I don't, but I can saw the same for virtually everymovie I've watched.

 

MacLeod got it spot on, we all like different things about Star Trek. Personally I don't like the reboots but that doesn't mean they are crap films. Besides it would be a very dull forum if we all agreed on everything!

 

I love Star Trek Into Darkness! It and Star Trek are hugely entertaining movies.

There is a lot of bitching and moaning about it, but that's true of every Trek movie - even Wrath of Khan was torn to shreds by some in fanzines at the time.

 

Every time there has been a new Star Trek Series or Movie (All the way back to The Animated Series, The Motion Picture, and Wrath of Khan), there have been people the new Movie or Series just didn't appeal to.

Some of those, yea, they just can't accept anything new, and others just want to be Haterz. But, for others, there are genuinely things that just don't work for them. Different Strokes.

I have found enjoyment in most all of Trek, personally.

The Motion Picture, is a bit slow, but, has outstanding eye candy.

Enterprise and Voyager, didn't really appeal to me a whole lot (Admittedly my own pre-conceived notions) during their First Run, but, I have since watched both on DVD, and I found a lot to like in them.

Nemesis, I don't understand the outright hatred for it. Yes, it's got it's problems, but, IMHO, it's not the steaming pile most seem to think it is.

I think my least favorite Trek is Insurrection, it's just mostly boring to me, but, I've gotten some enjoyment out of it.

Although, definitely a very different take on Star Trek, I really like the JJ Abrams Movies, and although, there are many differences, I do believe JJ captured the spirit of Trek
