I never thought Ted and Robin were all that "awful" as a couple, or that their relationship was "toxic" as others have been saying.

They clearly wanted different things when they were younger, and there were some trust issues and moments of jealousy from either side at different points, but it's not like they were throwing furniture at the walls or shooting up heroin together or anything. Lol

Ultimately it was always clear that they cared for each other and had feelings for each other. If the Mother had never died it's likely nothing more ever would have been made of it. But she did die, so the fact Ted might try (after a long grieving period) to reconnect with Robin one more time makes perfect sense.

Holy crap! That Teddy Roosevelt connection is awesome! So the constant talk of TR in the third to last episode was a huge amount of blatant foreshadowing!!! That's great!!!

Still hate the ending though :p

I've only seen the finale once, but after they had all drifted apart, didn't Robin tell Lily that it would be weird hanging out with her ex-husband and the guy she should probably have been with all along?

I thought overall, the finale was very well done - I loved the flashforwards into everybody's future. The thing that left a bitter taste was Ted ending up with Robin at the end, after her and Barney separated. What was the point of having almost all of the final season take place during Barney and Robin's wedding weekend, only to have them divorced in the space of a few minutes? Barney was even reset back to his old ways, even if I did like he idea of him having a baby girl.

I thought Tracy dying had obviously been foreshadowed a few episodes ago, so it wasn't very shocking, but it was still so, so very sad. She was easily the best thing in this season, so when I finally saw the pivotal meeting between her and Ted, the same time that I saw that she died, my heart was in my mouth. :(

It was a bittersweet twist to the whole story, and I loved it. I was happy that Ted, after six years of grieving, finally got to a place where he appreciated the time he had with Tracy, and was ready to move on. It just bugs me that after we were shown countless times that Ted and Robin were a bad match, and especially after we finally saw Ted move on from Robin in this final season, he decides he's going to get back with her? Argh.

Though perhaps the point is that he was finally ready to move on, and he thought he'd hit Robin first before looking for love again? ;)

So after thinking about this a bit more, I've come to really appreciate where everything left off. Each of the five of them were given the fulfillment of every longing of their hearts. Robin lived a fulfilling life of travel and career, married the awesome man she loved, and ended up with the love of her life. Lily lived the fulfilling life of a loving wife and mother, and got her dream of living in Rome. Marshall gave of himself to his wife and family, and still finally fulfilled his dream of become a successful judge. Barney married the girl of his dreams, matured and discovered that random, meaningless, one night stands could never bring him fulfillment, and also received ultimate fulfillment from, ironically enough, random, meaningless, one night stands. And Ted fell in love with the perfect woman, married her, and raised a family, and then still was able to end up with the woman of his dreams.

Each of them also had to go through some suffering in order for this to happen, and it seemed to be in proportion to the amount of suffering and loss they caused everyone else. Marshall had to go through years of a horrible job, in exchange for only letting Lily fulfill part of her life's desire. Lily had to give up much of the life she might have chosen, in exchange for the harm she caused to Marshall's career. Barney lost the ability to have that 'happily ever after' with Robin, and while he didn't really cause any of the other four any problems, he had done so many bad things in life, it was kind of fitting. Ted lost one of the two loves of his life, in exchange for getting to have them both, in a way. And Robin lost years of time with the most important people in her life in exchange for getting the career she wanted despite all the harm it caused Lily, Barney, and Ted.

Everyone got ups and downs. And the great part is that the five of them can sit on that covered porch and grow old together now. Even though they don't show it, they will all live happily ever after. :techman:

Ted needed to be as sick of kids as Robin was, before they could hook up permenantly.

Ted: Robin I love you, I've always loved you, will you go out with me?

    Robin: Dump the kids.

    Ted: Done.

    Something along those lines? ;)

It sounds like Robin mellowed (at least) towards Ted's kids. We don't know what happened in the six years since Tracy died, especially between Ted, Robin, Penny & Luke. It sounded like Robin was there for them and visited often. As I said upstream, she may have gotten a job based in NY. It's anyone's guess.

    Babies are not teenagers.

If Ted still had babies, she wouldn't have gone near him.

I think the problem with Ted & Robin earlier was that Robin didn't know what she wanted. She was thinking career first and relationships second. Robin seemed to be the one who was avoiding the two of them.

    She didn't want kids.

    They broke up.

    Ted said he didn't care.

    They got back together again.

They broke up again for reason, and then they found out that she's barren.

Perfect for Barney who never wanted kids and would never want kids.

    Irony.

Proves that what you think you want may not be what you really need.

Actually we saw her warm up to the idea of kids in a later episode (I believe the one where she learns she's infertile).

She found out she was infertile, and told Kevin that she couldn't have kids. Kevin suggested they could adopt, and Robin flat-out said she didn't want kids, full-stop.

Yeah and she was also pretty damn devastated when she learned she couldn't have kids. So clearly she was not completely opposed to the idea.

And there was also that episode where, after continually avoiding ever holding Lily's baby, she finally relented and ended up loving it. And then spent the entire night holding him.

If she could be persuaded back then, surely 20 years later she might be even more open to the idea of kids.

just because you don't want to have children yourself doesn't necessarily mean you hate children.

btw, it is pretty unlikely that you would go into a dr's office for a pregnancy test and have them tell you, just from that test alone, that you can NEVER have children.

Hmm, apparently (along with some other cut scenes), there was a crucial scene where Ted and Robin meet up earlier in a diner and it's suggested that she's been thinking about him in those later years a lot more than he was thinking about her.

Which might have made the transition at least a little bit smoother for some people. And made it clear that Ted wasn't "holding a torch" for Robin all through his marriage to Tracy at all, as some (strangely) seem to think.
