ST5 attack on Paradise city question

Palm trees have super long roots, so, despite desert water tables being extremely low, it is possible for said trees to grow there. I'm pretty certain parts of the Sahara have palm trees.

What I want to know is: where was Axl during all of this? One would think that as desperately as he seemed to want to get there here, that by the 23rd century he would have made it. ;)

Oh, he made it.

where did Uhura find palm leaves on Nimbus III, a desert planet?
An oasis.

Maybe she should have been singing, 'Midnight at the Oasis.' (striving for a Maria Muldaur/Diana Muldaur crossover/tiein here & failing.)

Actually it would have been neat to hear the big 3 try to croon that one around the campfire. Probably right up there with Nimoy doing 'Proud Mary' and Shat's pop renditions.

That song popped in my head as soon as I read the OP.

Well, heck, they came down in a shuttlecraft. Those things are lousy with toothpicks^W^W with palm leaves!

As much as I love it, this IS trek 5 we're talking about. The a/c on the ship was probably like everything else (i.e., not working right), so the palm leaves were probably for fanning themselves when the bridge got too stuffy.

She picked them up at the beach on the way in. My bigger WTF moment (after 20 something years, just watched it again tonight) is why were the big three camping in Yosemite NATIONAL park. Thought the nation states were long gone. ??? ;)

Some names just stick. We have places in Finland that can be translated as King's road or King's spring, even though we haven't had a king for over 200 years.

Wouldn't it have been tons cooler if they'd just roared into town on the shuttlecraft, with doors open and guys hanging out with their phasers like an attack Huey? I've had that image in my head for nearly a quarter-century now, with the mockup on a crane as it was during landing, but instead doing a nice rotating maneuver as they clear the settlers on the ground prior to setting down inside Paradise (or better still, crashing through the roof of the saloon.)

Probably would have been cheaper than dealing with the horses and could have skirted (no pun intended) Uhura's whole rump romp.

Honestly, the whole attack as executed seems kind of ill-conceived. You'd think Starfleet would have better tactics for dealing with such things.

Well yeah, all you need to do is that PIECE OF THE ACTION thing where you stun the whole block, end crisis. Or you send any ship with a working transporter. But I guess that is kind of like 'what if Kirk raises the shields? when he should have?' in TWOK. You don't have a movie.
