years ago in June 1997 when this first aired there was a girl I was madly, madly in love with. The night this episode aired she called me for the first time. But she called me at the exact moment Sisko was giving his General MacArthur “I shall return” speech. I literally became Gabe from Trekkies and Justin Long from Galaxy Quest, freaking out that she had called at the worst possible time! ….We never hooked up.
The effects, the music, the tension, the rapid fire pace, this isn’t just a great Trek episode to me, this one of my favorite TV hours of all time. With the exception of the Rom\Leeta crap this a perfect episode. And I end up forgiving Rom at the end for his little moment with Quark where he tells him no matter what happens they are brothers and belong together.
And speaking of Sisko’s farewell speech, I really thought he was speaking to the audience with this one. “Yeah we know seasons 1 and 2 were pretty lame, things got better in 3, but when Worf showed up we got awesome. So now five years later we’re pretty badass around here.”
The ending is my favorite season finale of anything. Sisko leaving the baseball was terrific and the closing shot of the Federation-Klingon fleet was mind blowing.
